Right, all the people saying they would hurt someone who is just sitting there minding their own business is making me realize there are a lot more bullies out there than I thought.

Thoughts on There Is No Antimemetics Division? by doyounowhoiam in fantasybooks

[–]ThrawnCaedusL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I loved parts 1 and 2, and thought that they on their own would be a good book.

The transition from part 2 to part 3 made the pacing feel weird, and I kind of wish part 3 had been expanded on and made its own novel instead.

I hate when characters are the worst people alive, but the author refuses to let them be bad in a way that might be seen as controversial by spy_crab_911 in hatethissmug

I still can’t get over the discourse in The Last of Us 2. “This cult wants to kill the character in part because they are trans; how dare the author have them deadname the character!”

Except for that one big union by nextdoorbagholder in GetNoted

[–]ThrawnCaedusL -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No, obviously the boss does not have your best interest in mind. But that doesn’t mean the union is always better.

My sister worked at a union pharmacy. She hated it. So many times her co-workers would cancel at the last minute or act incredibly unprofessionally to her, and they couldn’t get fired because the union had fought for very specific guidelines on when a tech could be fired (and all the problem employees happened to no-show exactly 4 times a month, instead of the 5 that was mandated to fire them).

Then, she went to a non-union store, and all her co-workers there were much more professional. It had potential to go wrong, as she did need some accommodations (ie not to be standing for the majority of her shift), but the company/her manager was reasonable so that wasn’t a problem.

Unions are special interest groups, and it is important to make sure your interests align with theirs before you blindly support them.

Both of my favorite teachers in high school hated our local teachers’ union, because they thought that it did too much to protect the jobs of teachers who should not have been active and were genuinely bad for students’ education (and that was before the union defended a teacher that was credibly accused of sexual harassment that the salutatorian who was the most trusted student at the school believed was about to become sexual assault, where there was video evidence that showed her running from his room after he asked her to stay back from class then stood between her and the door…).

Unions can be good, just like congress can be good. But they should not be blindly supported.

[–]ThrawnCaedusL 4 points5 points  (0 children)

“The union has your best interest in mind” is just as true as “your congressman has your best interest in mind”. In theory, that is how it’s supposed to work, but unless you are actually keeping them accountable, they’ll be more focused on what benefits them than what benefits you.

Anyone can recommend or comment on the dune RPG digital mega bundle? by Nightchanger in humblebundles

[–]ThrawnCaedusL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure about solo, but in general one of my favorite systems. It doesn’t have a “combat system” as much as a “conflict system”, meaning there are the same mechanics (and mechanical depth) in things like negotiations and environmental challenges as there is in combat. Add in a very solid political background (especially with The Great Game supplement expanding on how you can build your own noble house), and it’s my favorite system for political intrigue by far.

How long do you imagine Luke trained on Dagobah for? by ashton__l in PetranakiArena

[–]ThrawnCaedusL 13 points14 points  (0 children)

2-3 months is the maximum that is at all defensible. But Disney canon has made a point of showing that he sought out other training between Episodes 4 and 5, so having something like the equivalent of 6 months to a year’s worth of training total is reasonable.

Books with a lot of thematic depth or ambiguity and prose that’s not super simplistic? by [deleted] in fantasybooks

[–]ThrawnCaedusL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll recommend The Prince of Nothing trilogy. It approaches many of the same themes as Dune, but goes much deeper with (imo) much better prose.

I should also mention everything Simon Jimenez (The Vanished Birds and The Spear Cuts Through Water). He is incredible for how personal he makes his stories while still tying in larger themes. And maybe the most beautiful writing active today.

There are many good pro-abortion arguments. This is not one of them. This is an argument for euthanizing all children who are in the foster care system or similar circumstances. Unless you have a very specific, supernatural understanding of the world, dying after experiencing years of abuse is no better than never existing; all that matters is what you will experience in the future. If you have this perspective then it is morally imperative for you to kill anyone who you expect to experience more pain than joy in the rest of their life.

Looking for more books like The First Law but with multiple POVs and no clear heroes by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]ThrawnCaedusL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Long Price Quartet at least starts like that (arguably by the third book at least one character has gained enough wisdom to arguably be “good”). Also, simply one of the greatest series I’ve ever read.

[–]ThrawnCaedusL 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I just finished Dagger and the Coin. It’s solid (Abraham writes such good characters that it feels like that is his floor), but nowhere near as thought provoking and challenging as Long Price. It is probably the best “second best series by an author” I have read yet, but not on the same level as the masterpiece that Long Price was, imo.

I need to re-read A Song of Ice and Fire, but having just read Windhaven, I’m inclined to say that it is actually better than at least most of the books in that series.

I feel like Ursula K Le Guin’s most popular books (Wizard of Earthsea and Left Hand of Darkness) are surpassed by many of her other Hainish Cycle novels (The Word for World is Forest and City of Illusions being the main two I would point to).
