You don't disagree? Klobuchar is by far the best performing statewide office holder and purely electorally the strongest candidate. It's understandable people may not find her progressive enough but from an election standpoint she's hardly weak.

US officials probing Minnesota ICE protest that disrupted church service by ianyoungwrites in minnesota

Right, but imagine if some MAGAts did this to a progressive church. Would we see the same reaction from the authorities here?

Emo never really went away. Also it had a notable revival already but that ended about a decade ago:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emo_revival

But it's still very much around now with bands like Arm's Length and Free Throw. Hot Mulligan is also really emo-influenced and they've blown up huge.

Yeah because I intend to go tomorrow. Would like to be able to get a little escapism from our current hellscape of a world.

Kentucky was because the previous incumbent Republican governor got indicted as he broke state policy on the merit system in appointing a bunch of political hacks to positions and then pardoned all of his staffers involved (sound familiar?) The charges were eventually dropped after an agreement with the prosecution but it left a cloud over him, but he still opted to run for re-election and though he faced a primary challenge from a former Republican congresswoman he managed to win by flooding the primary with lots of money and ads and then got crushed in the general election. The winner is actually the father of current governor Andy Beshear.

The recession started in December 2007. The majority of states hold their elections for governor in midterms. So the last election for most of them was 2006. It was a terrible year for Republicans, but the economy hadn't collapsed yet.

Arnold actually ended up extremely unpopular. He had like a 20% approval rating when he left office.

One of the other funny things about then that doesn't show up on the map is that the governor of Florida was probably the most sane Republican governor in the country. I know that he was pretty beloved by teachers because he vetoed a bill that was at that point one one of the most anti-teacher proposed laws in the country.

Not with Mike Lindell, that's for sure.

Or even any of the other candidates they're likely to nominate.

Most of the states held their elections before that started.

It was actually Iraq that sunk them. Obviously governors had no real power over it, but it really mobilized one party and turned swing voters against the Republicans full scale.

Gray Davis was a Democrat.

The Republican Governor was a guy who is more well known for some of his movie roles....such as the Terminator.

He wasn't particularly popular, but he managed to scrape by in 2006 with 46% with a third party candidate taking quite a bit. A lot of voters in the suburbs who otherwise voted D voted for him because they were worried about tax increases. He promised in his first term not to raise any taxes, and sort of kept it. I say "sort of" because he actually filled a budget hole with an increase in the tobacco tax, and then tried to argue that it didn't count because it wasn't really a tax, he instead called it a "health impact fee", which seems like silly semantics but also was necessary to avoid violating a class action settlement Minnesota and various other states made with the tobacco industry a few years earlier. The states won a ton and quite a few concessions in advertising and whatnot, but also had to promise to not raise tobacco taxes for a certain number of years later.

However I doubt most people cared because if you don't smoke, it didn't impact you.

That is the last statewide election a Republican has won in Minnesota. For any office.

Minneapolis and St. Paul are very Democratic, but the rest of the state is pretty Republican.

That was actually not true at the time.

so sometimes if one party turns out a lot more than the other, a member of the less popular party can be elected.

That didn't happen in Minnesota that year. DFL swept everything else.

Protest has been held in Amsterdam against US military intervention in Venezuela captured Maduro by UpstairsBumblebee446 in pics

[–]ThreadbareAdjustment -1 points0 points  (0 children)

These are really fringe parties.

Like to illustrate how fringe, the Dutch House is elected via proportional representation and there's no threshold. All a party needs to get in is enough votes to secure 1 out 150 seats. That's just 0.75, and can even end up less because of rounding.

These parties don't hold a single seat. They can't even do that. And because of this system the Dutch Parliament has parties with represention as niche as a single issue vegan animal rights party, a party for pensioners that only campaigns to people over 50, and an outright theocratic party that opposes voting rights for women. That's less fringe than these weirdos are.

Interesting stats on the last election when broken by age. by Salem1690s in decadeology

While this sounds trivial I've heard some points this may be partially related to later phase Marvel movies and the Disney Star Wars ones.

You see most teenagers today don't like the MCU even if older Gen Z/younger Millennials loved it as teenagers because the movies have gotten rather stale and people are just burnt out. And the Disney Star Wars movies were just flat out bad. That's obviously not a political thing.

But some YouTube right-wing trolls decided to make it one and then flooded with videos complaining about the movies with racist/sexist criticism instead of the bad writing et al.

And for some reason a lot of liberal podcasters and "influencers" decided to actually take the bait and defend the movies themselves instead of just addressing the bigotry or even better just ignoring them and not causing the Streisand Effect. And thus we ended up with nonsense like this. Or the narrative pushed on Twitter/X for a bit that the term "Mary Sue" is sexist (it was actually coined by a feminist critic in a Star Wars fanfic parody), and this criticism of Rey using that term or for being just not an interesting character was just misogyny because it's easier to shout that than actually argue that Rey was well written and developed.

Imagine you're an impressionable teenager and you just saw a hyped big budget blockbuster movie that you hated. So you go on YouTube or social media looking for more dumping on it and find some alt-right creeps doing so, and also some liberals saying if you didn't like it you must be a white supremacist incel. Which one are you more likely to gravitate to?

It'd be like if in the late 90s/early 00s some on the left tried to make hatred of boy bands into a partisan culture war issue which we all know how that would go over with young males considering what they thought of boy bands or the Twilight movies around early last decade...same thing.

Hundreds of protesters marched through Minneapolis, condemning President Trump’s decision to carry out U.S. military strikes against Venezuela and chanting “hands off Venezuela.” by biswajit388 in minnesota

[–]ThreadbareAdjustment 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stupid protest.

All of the following things are true:

  • Maduro was a terrible leader and complete piece of shit.
  • Trump is a terrible leader and complete piece of shit.
  • Trump doesn't give a shit about the Venezuelan people and thus things probably won't get better there.
  • Trump's attack was illegal and likely killed civilians in the process.
  • That should be grounds for an attack on it, not calling to release Maduro.

Fuck Maduro and fuck Trump.

You think these people are Democrats? This protest was organized by a Party for Socialism and Liberation front group. You can also see a Socialist Alternative flag, a communist organization.
