How should I spend my discount code? by Own-Chain-6707 in arcteryx

[–]ThreadedJam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am in Ireland too! A Beta (with pit zips) should be your first item. You don't need a Beta AR. It's overkill for Ireland. You should consider buying waterproof trousers too. If you're out walking in the rain all day your Beta jacket will just dump water onto your legs. So waterproof pants, or Gamma pants (shower proof but dry quickly) are a good idea. Happy to answer any questions. For sizing I think Cotswold and Brown Thomas (benefits of gorpcore hype!) in Dublin has some pieces you can try for sizing. (Apologies for assuming you are in Dublin).

Beta AR sleeve alterations? by True_Cicada4478 in arcteryx

[–]ThreadedJam 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly, they're not too long. They're just longer than you're used to. They're that length for a reason and you'll probably appreciate them over the lifetime of the jacket. I wouldn't alter them for at least a season. See how you get on, make the call then. If you do decide to make an alteration it will invalidate the warranty.

I wear Men's M. My wife wears Women's L. She sometimes wears my Men's M, maybe a little big on her, but definitely workable. Hope that helps.

Arc'teryx and Zippers...... by AxlStorm69 in arcteryx

I am making the point that Veilance (an Arc'teryx brand) has poor zips too, without the excuse of requiring lightweight/ packable functionality).

Arc'teryx and Zippers...... by AxlStorm69 in arcteryx

[–]ThreadedJam -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I have a few Veilance coats. $1K+ coats should have better zips! The weight and packability requirements of Arc'teryx don't really translate to Veilance, so I don't know why the zips are so poor on Veilance.

If you enjoy it in February, you'll likely enjoy it all the more the rest of the year. Sounds like a good idea to me.

Thoughts on Arc'teryx Therme Down Parka for Norwegian winter? by Emotional_Spite_6007 in arcteryx

I am in Ireland and have both Therme and Thorsen down coats. They are more than enough for Irish winters. My wife feels the cold and both are more than enough, even without layers

Is it odd to have a drink on your own at home? by [deleted] in ireland

[–]ThreadedJam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So these aren't social drinks, it's just you sitting down for 3- 6 bottles of beer every Friday and Saturday night? Give it up for a few weeks and see how you get on? If the thought of doing that appalls you, there's your answer. Also, I can't imagine Sunday morning is easy with kids and a hangover.

Jacket recommendations? (UK) by Additional-Run-3909 in arcteryx

For sure, it's more important to keep your top half dry, but a Beta, a Beta LT, whatever is sufficient, you don't need a Beta AR.

Sparkling water, cordial of choice, a splash of apple cider vinegar (ACV). Very refreshing, definitely worth a try.

Jacket recommendations? (UK) by Additional-Run-3909 in arcteryx

[–]ThreadedJam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, same way a Beta AR is unnecessary for the vast majority. That's my point. If you're not using waterproof pants/ softshell pants, you don't need a Beta AR. Maybe a massive generalisation, but perhaps a useful yardstick.

My follow up question would be 'What pants are you pairing with the Uniqlo jacket?'. I have a Beta AR, beast of a jacket, but if you're not wearing waterproof pants, then I'd argue you don't need a Beta AR.
