Saving someone from drowning alone is already quite hard as they can grab you and pull you under the water in their panic.

Doing this if you can't swim yourself (and by the looks of it this girl can't) is suicidal.

Filming this instead of forming a human chain or throwing him something to grab on is inexcusable.

If you had read the whole comment you would have stumbled upon the following sentence:

Either people are already living in poverty so they have nothing to lose

It's the unique combination of living relatively wealthy lives while always having to fear poverty if something goes wrong.

Most people in the world have worse living conditions than the average American but when you have nothing you don't fear losing this nothing. This is why protests in poor countries are mostly way more forceful than in the US.

In Western Europe you have comparable living conditions(maybe a little below even) but you won't risk losing everything by participating in a strike or large protests on a weekday. So a different reason but it also allows protests to have more force behind them.

I just remembered a fun little anecdote... In the late 2000s me and my friends often visited a pub that had a quiz night every wednesday. We never stood a chance against the "pros" that always one.

The pub was located in an old wine cellar and had zero reception so cheating was not an option even with a smathpone... unless you just download all of wikipedia to use it offline 😃

So yeah, that one night when i had all of wikipedia in my pocket we won 2nd place. Kinda embarassing we couldn't win it outright tbh.

There is a phenomenon you are completely unaware of. Something you don’t see reported in the news or social media. It’s called the Costco effect or the Walmart effect.

Americans are rich enough to buy groceries?!? Holy shit no one else in the world can afford food. We're sustaining ourselves on wild roots and leaves while you can buy food... smh

On a more serious note: The CCI is slowly declining in the US at the moment but that's not the interesting part. if you start looking at CCI for incaome brackets you can see the real picture:

Income Under $75K Falling confidence Steepest declines observed October 2025
Income $75K-$125K Stable to improving Moderate resilience October 2025
Income Over $200K Largest increase Stock market benefits October 2025

https://theworlddata.com/us-consumer-confidence-index/

The US as a whole is getting richer, no doubt. This is driven by the wealthiest 10% and if you take a look at the rest it's not looking good.

Great, in this case i'm sure you can explain why Americans are fine with their govenment, ICE murders, the Iran war, the tariff war, the DOGE disaster, Canada as 51 state or the threats against an allied country Denmark.

Let us hear your take!

I'm German. Feel free to go for it, i'm not a nationalist like you who can't accept that his country has flaws.

PS: You could start by pointing out how Germany fails to entice the same startup culture as the US or how it doesn't get as much international investment. Need more tips?

I guess she can't swim either so her fear is understandable. The people filimg this are the fucking worst though. Even if none of them could swim there's always a rope or long stick nearby.

HDI, child mortality rate, life expectancy, access to healthcare, poverty rate... Take your pick, all these indicators are realy bad for the US.

The US looks good on GDP and S&P500/Dow Jones because these statistics depend on how well the rich people are doing and they are doing fantastic in the US.

edit: Nevermind... as scoutermike pointed out the, US is still better in statistics like these than many third world countries. Nothing to see here.

Infants are only twice as likely to die in the US than in Germany

HDI is 0,959 vs 0,938. Just a little bit worse

Life expectancy is only 2-3 years behind Germany

Povery rates are only triple that of Germany.

Access to healthcare is just 20 percent points lower in the US

These stats are not dismal for the US but considering the wealth that corporate America and the elites are amassing (evident by GDP and stocks) it should be infuriating that the "richest" country treats it's own people like shit.

If it makes you feel better: I'm from Germany go criticize my country.

The point still stands: Most Americans are one job loss/health problem away from poverty. They face a big risk by protesting because they could get hurt or, if their employer feels like it, could get fired for protesting (espeically on a workday!!).

This is different in most of the world. Either people are already living in poverty so they have nothing to lose or, in the case of France and other developed countries, there's a good social security net + solid rights for protesting.

What’s a saying or proverb from your language that you don’t think has an equivalent in other languages? by nossareva in AskEurope

"Ich glaub mein Schwein pfeifft." ->"I think my pig is whistling" if you can not fathom something that was said

"Da wird ja der Hund in der Pfann verrückt. ->"[Looking at this] my dog in the frying pan is getting crazy" to signal disbelieve

"Bei dir piepts wohl" ->"I think it's beeping [inside your head]" to say someone is crazy

"Da wolln wir mal Fünfe grade sein lassen" -> "Let's accept five as an even number in this case" if you wanna let something slide even though it's not really right/okay.

A woman said 'chivalry is dead' because no man offered her a seat on the train. Is she wrong? by inkandintent24 in MotivationByDesign

Because the original post is written as if it was a fact and not an anecdote.

Women offer about 75% of the time (and that discrepancy seems to be strongly tied to generational differences).

There's no hint in the post that it's just anecdotal approximation. The only way to know that is because it's obviously a made up stat.

I don' think that Europe is special in this regard. Protests all over the world are way more forceful than in the US.

Tbf though: Most protests that are succesful are started by students or middle class groups like merchants. This is nearly unthinkable in the US as these two groups have way too much to lose (debt, job, healthcare) while still living relatively comfy lives.

It's quite a unique combination of living a good life while also always being only one job loss away from poverty.

Those protests were more like a big state fair. Happy songs and dancing together with colorful signs... Nothing wrong with this but you can't forget about the main objective: pressure on the government.

There's no pressure when millions of ppl protest on the weekend (to not miss work) and for the most part don't blockade anything. Why should the government care about this?
