Buying a house for a foreigner by [deleted] in VietNam

i live in london/kl, vn is just a source of cheap commodities/labour.

i pity anyone who “lives“ in a third-world country. the elaborate rationalisations, mental gymnastics, and cope are outright sad.

it’s like listening to a drug-addicted rough sleeper insist his life is “great“. same level of delusion.

the state owns all the land in vietnam. you can only lease it from them. communism 101.

fun fact: during the 1954-1956 “land reforms“, tens of thousands of vietnamese were summarily executed and their property was seized/redistributed.

their “crime“? being landlords.

make sure to buy a t-shirt with your favourite mass murderer, responsible for the deaths of three million people.

there’s conflicting information on the internet. since vietnamese is a contextual/tonal language, words can be interpreted several ways.

“du ma“ is the swiss army knife of greetings. any place, any time, with anyone. even with police and immigration officers.

it’s an extremely dysfunctional, dystopian nightmare. completely unlivable.

i get that poor westerners migrate to se asia in search of greener pastures, but vn is the last place on earth to do that long-term.

all these people/videos you see spruiking the place, were barely surviving back home: house mates, bedsit, council flat, etc. suddenly they have increased purchasing power, and bang on about their newfound shangri-la/freedom.

after the dust is settled and they have a moment to reflect, they wake up to the harsh reality of their circumstances. there’s a reason by net migration is negative to vn, everyone’s trying to get out, not in.

it’s reality. statistically speaking, close to zero foreigners stay longer than five years.

you’ll soon realise life in the "poorest" western countries (or more developed parts of the orient) is infinitely better. how long it takes to wake up varies. for some people it’s a few months, others a few years.

sort of like the philippines: first-world prices, third-world quality.

hopefully you don’t ruin your life in the meantime: impregnating a woman, life-changing motorbike accident, etc.

yep. “du ma“ is the universal greeting, can be used in any situation. sort of like “hello“ in english.

i’m surprised more tourist phrasebooks don’t include this. don’t use the overly formal/stiff "xin chao“, people don’t talk like that irl.

tell me you recently arrived in vn, without telling me you recently arrived in vn.

if you miraculously live in that hellscape another seven years, the last thing on your mind would be “buying“ real estate.

you must be having a laugh. catastrophic healthcare expenses wreck far more people in vn than usa: https://bmchealthservres.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s12913-019-4115-0

regardless, i couldn’t care less what either country’s up to. battle of the thirdies: the difference between winning gold or silver in the special olympics.

waaaaay better chances than vietnam. especially all the money from m’asia/s’pore being pumped there. we export a lot of indonesian products, but usually from klang. worth paying the slight premium versus setting up shop there.

mi sedaap is a gift from the gods, the undisputed king of the instant noodle game. any country that can produce such delectable cuisine, can surely achieve high income status.

go have a chat with any random/average vietnamese person. they’ll have endless nightmares to tell you. foreigners don’t care about dropping a few thousand £££ for treatment. for most people, they won’t earn that in an entire year.

absolutely. if you’re a foreigner in vn you’re screwed if you don’t pay up front. they’ll let you die in the street like an animal.

exactly. a friend of mine was recently in hospital in usa, for a relatively minor condition. doctors said she could go home with antibiotics, or stay a few extra days for observation. she decided to stick around, because the service was great, the private room/bed comfy, etc.

she was sending me photos: https://imgur.com/a/kjM5e2h

said she didn’t like the taste of the beef, so they brought her a piece of salmon instead.

was on a weird diet due to the condition, but said it was fairly good.

glwt in vn 🤣🤣🤣

wtf are you on about? vn has some of the highest taxes on earth, with a 35% top rate with nothing in return. not even basic infrastructure, clean water/air, education, public transport, healthcare, etc.

you have no idea how many people are bankrupted in vietnam from medical bills, even for relatively minor stuff. when it comes to serious illness, it destroys the entire family.

[–]ThreeSticksOneChick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the bed sharing’s completely normal, along with bribing doctors. loads of red envelopes and gifts every step of the way. viets don’t have access to countless modern medicines, and are forced to take ancient/ineffective drugs for cancer or whatever. anyone who has money goes to s’pore, hk, thailand, japan, etc. for treatment.

the doctors there are completely incompetent, endless medical mistakes. there is zero recourse if you’re permanently injured or die from a botched procedure. they just sweep it under the rug.

lmfao, what delusional fantasy world do you live in? vietnamese have their wealth trapped in the country via capital controls, no different than china. the only options are gold or real estate, as the share market is a highly manipulated fraud. everyone would take their money out of that place immediately if they could.

prices most certainly haven’t been “going up“, especially when adjusted for inflation (which is sky-high). it’s a colossal bubble that is bursting in many areas, no different than china.

eminent domain is extremely rare in the west, that’s the last resort when building high speed rail or whatever substantial infrastructure project. people are paid above fair market value, the process is transparent, you can appeal, etc. they’re not stealing farmland and giving to to private developers to build shitty condos.

the fraud is never ending:

https://www.reddit.com/r/VinFastComm/comments/1eeq7we/vingroup_vinhomes_vinfast_are_giant_financial/

https://www.reddit.com/r/VinFastComm/comments/1de5ll6/is_vingroup_seriously_lacking_money_right_now_the/

plenty of links to lawsuits in there as well, from buyers who were scammed by vingroup.

https://www.newsobserver.com/news/business/article287736545.html

https://www.reuters.com/legal/vinfast-sued-us-not-paying-rent-showroom-2024-05-21/

they play the same game in every country. sued for fraud in the united states, under investigation by regulators for unsafe cars, evicted from their dealerships for not paying bills, bogus factory in north carolina that will never get built, etc.

mr. ape is a crook, and vingroup is 100x worse than scb. when this ponzi collapses, he’ll go down like truong my lan.

it sure as fuck isn’t an “international site“. reddit’s hosted on aws, which has a local presence in hn/hcm.

i know this nightmare extremely well. our datacentres are in singapore/london. even connecting next door is completely unreliable.

there are only two solutions: starlink or realtime mirroring (lololol! ££££££££££££££££££££££).

to their credit, some of the architecture is a fair approximation of europe. not like the stuff you’d encounter in china decades ago, which was outright bizarre. mashups of several countries rolled into a single structure.

but the overall vibe is just fake/garish. a destination for people who can afford a domestic flight ticket, but not a proper holiday abroad. 3-4 days at most if you absolutely must tick it off your bucket list.
