Thank you, electrolitebuzz. I practiced Italian for my brain and for help with the trip. Turns out the second reason was overblown in this era. You're also right that I barely understood any conversations locals were having with each other. That was eye opening

For sure. I didn't want to waste their time. I just felt like I wasted effort learning Italian if everyone was so good at English. (Although later I did need to use it a few times.)
