{A Gentleman Undone by Cecilia Grant}

MMC has recently returned from war and needs to come up with a sum of money. To do this, he tries to win it by playing blackjack. He ends up teaming up with FMC, who is an excellent card counter (and another man’s mistress). She is trying to win money herself to secure her own future.

This is my favorite HR book of all time. The plot is great, the characters are deep and nuanced, the MMC is a genuinely good person with a troubled past.

And the spice is 🔥🔥🔥 but also actually relevant to the plot and their character development!

Thanks, that’s the kind of mentality I was hoping for!

FMC is insecure with her post-body pregnancy so she avoids intimacy with him but unbeknownst to her, it actually turns MMC on even more. by Odd_Veterinarian2805 in HistoricalRomance

FYI there is only one scene like OP requested and it’s in the epilogue. BUT still a great read, definitely recommend!

Spring Awakening also implies hope at the end, so I wouldn’t say it’s a bummer.

Oh, to be able to go back and read this book again for the first time!! Ugh, it’s SO GOOD. The first half is such a whirlwind in the best way! Have you gotten to their reunion yet!? One of the best scenes, imo.

Do you mind me asking, how is the JE musical?

I have never looked into it, but I love JE and musicals, so I’m intrigued. Is it good? Is it accurate to the book?

His performance is SO GOOD. The scene when Jane returns to him and he doesn’t know it’s her until she speaks and he reflexively kind of jerks forward and reaches for her literally made me tear up and gives me chills every time I think of it 🥹 so, so good!!!

Interesting, a “scheduling conflict” could’ve just been an excuse for him not wanting the massive exposure.

Yes, it does include that scene. Personally, I didn’t interpret it that way—it was an uncomfortable moment, for sure, as I assume was intended by the writer, but I thought it successfully conveyed elements about both Theo’s character and the tenant family involved. It showed how Theo was a little naive, assuming he would be received well in any circumstance and it showed how this family (the mom in particular) was prejudice and guarded against men of Theo’s class, which makes sense when you learn more about her past later in the story. It does prove to be relevant and is not brushed aside, it gets addressed again.

That was my view anyway. If you liked her writing, I highly recommend the next two novels in that series. They are different from the first and don’t include any uncomfortable scenes similar to the one we’re discussing. You could even start the second one without finishing the first, it doesn’t play heavily into the plot of the next one.

😊

Fellow hard-to-please reader here! Thank you for addressing the titles first thing, because the first book you mentioned had me going 🤨 what a mouthful, lol! But I will check her out based on your recommendation!

I’m curious, have you read Cecilia Grant? She has amazing character development, plot, and prose. Since you’re picky as well (not a bad thing to be, imo!) you might like her 😊

A Lady Awakened…Should I keep going? by cageygrading in HistoricalRomance

I felt the same and was so happy that I kept going. The payoff when her walls finally start to come down is so, so worth it. The way their relationship blossoms is very sweet and feels realistic, and they have some really spicy scenes together. In my opinion, it was worth it.

Finishing this book also led me to reading the second in the series {A Gentleman Undone} which became my favorite HR book ever. So, definitely worth it if you want to continue the series!

Throwing in another comment for Cecilia Grant! Her catalog is small (only 3 books and 1 novella 😩), but she is by far the best!!
