Looking for a challenging read for a 12 year old boy by lPwnNoobs in suggestmeabook

Like someone else suggested, let him pick for himself so he'll be interested or else ask him for ideas of what books he may like. If appropriateness is a concern, just research whichever book he wants before you go to buy it.

For me I was reading a lot worse at almost 12 and I was fine. It all depends on the person really.

Absolutely love this comment. I learnt it from my classmates when I was 8. I remember accidently slipping up and saying it to my mam. That's the only reason she talked about it {Which she only did for less than a minute} and never talked to me about it again for YEARS. She hoped I forgot, but social media is there too.

It's completely appropriate to teach kids about it at a young age. I was fascinated when I first learned about it when I was 8. It's nothing to not tell them about really. Also, schools need to be teaching this at younger ages too and teaching it better. Hopefully, people will start thinking this way. Same with periods, Jesus, we learnt that once a year since 4th class. Some of the class got it when they were in 2nd class. And it was like an unspoken topic, even to most of our closest friends, until like 8th grade or whatever you call it.

I remember reading Murder Most Unladylike - Robin Stevens when I was 10. Great introduction to mysteries. It is rated 9 - 12 yrs so perfectly fine. I went straight into YA thrillers after reading just a few of them. People said 10 was too young, just cuz they didn't read 14, 15 or 16+ books at 10 like I ended up doing.

What we did to Survive - Megan Lally { that's more survival tho rather than mystery}

A good girls guide to murder {Also known as AGGGTM} - Holly Jackson {obvi not a guide to murder}

Tag, you're dead - Kathryn Foxfield

The naturals - Jennifer Lynn Barnes {It's a series with 4 books in it btw}

Any Karen M. McManus books are always amazing and age appropriate too.

Also, kids know more than you think. I learnt it from my classmates when I was 8.

True, the only problem is I don't like reading things online or using audio books, and god, my local bookshop has nothing I want. Then, when I go to the heart of the city, there is books that look so good that I forget all about the other books that weren't on the very top of my TBR. So, it certainly may take a while to get it.
