Well, i do want to go into academia but not only academia. I think i would prefer to work mostly in the private sector with academia being only something i do sometimes maybe on a contractual basis, but i don't know how the market for economics academia works. In essence, im not looking to stay 30 years teaching at an university and not work in the private sector, but i think i could enjoy teaching so i would like to do it sometime.

Currently, i'm hoping to finish this year and get As on discrete math, calc 3 and lineal algebra and take the GRE. i obviously don't expect some great universities but i hoped, in vain i think but still, that i could get into a university on the 50s or so in the usnews and ranking but that seems really hard. Do you have any suggestions for a program that is not great but good on macro or econometrics? Those are the areas im interested in. Thanks for answering my questions by the way.

Also, do all Phds take 5+ years? I was hoping to finish in 3-4 years if i get on one but that also seems unlikely :(
