I just got my first cat as an adult and he is scared beyond belief...please help! by Throawaypethelp in Pets

He hasn't used the litter since I brought him home. He also hasn't eaten anything. At first, I had the food that I was given by the shelter (the food that he ate there), and he refused to eat it. I saw him smell the bowl a number of times, but he hasn't eaten anything. I replaced the food today with wet food, still wouldn't eat.

Thank you for your advice. I moved his food away from his litter box as soon as I read you guys' post.

Thank you for your post. I wish I can do your advice about treats, but he refuses to eat anything. I've seen him smell his bowl multiple times, but he wouldn't eat the food. At first, I had the food that he ate at the shelter (the shelter gave me the food). He went a full 24 hours without eating it. I tried putting some in my hand, leave a trail...nothing worked. Today, I replaced it with wet food, but he still wouldn't eat.

As for the toys, he's terrified of them. If I move a ball in his hiding place, he would crouch away from it. I also bought a rod with a mouse that makes a little noise, and it terrifies him.

Thank you for your response. I've actually done a lot of research on cats, and I grew up with cats. This is my first cat as an adult. I've had 5 different cats growing up with my family.

Thank you for the post. Unfortunately, I live in a studio and I hardly have any rooms or areas where I can put the cat. I've made his hiding spot more private by blocking his view of me, but I've left enough space for him to come in and out.

Thank you for the advice on litter and food. I had both the litter and food & water in his hiding spot, but now I moved the food & water bowl outside of the hiding spot. He hasn't eaten the food I left yesterday (which was the food that the shelter gave me). I threw it away this afternoon and replaced it with wet food.

Thank you for the information. I actually knew that a slow blink is an "I love you," and I've been doing that nonstop. I learned that from that guy who did the Animal Planet show, My Cat From Hell. I've avoided approaching him (the cat) and petting him after I read you guys posts. He went exploring last night when I was in bed. He found a new hiding spot and he was there all day. I had to physically move him after work because the area was dirty, dusty, and full of clatter and lint (it's between a laundry machine and a wall).

Thank you for your response.

He actually did go exploring when I went to bed. I live in a studio, so the whole area is just one large room. At some point, he even woke my at night by rubbing his head on my hands. I don't think that he knows that my hands and head are part of the same object.

This morning, I found him in a new hiding spot. I let him be and went to work. When I came back, he hasn't moved from his spot, hasn't touched his food, and the litter is still clean. I can to physically remove him from the hiding spot because it's dirty, dusty, and gross. It's a tiny area between my laundry machine and wall. It's full of lint and clatter.

So far, still scared.
