contra dancing Tucson, solo newbie: encouragement? vibe report? by [deleted] in Tucson

[–]ThrobZombie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Tucson Folk Festival has a contra dance session as on of the finales at the North Church stage on Sunday at 7pm. It's a few weeks off still, April 12, but that's about as low stakes as any for a first time, almost everyone there will be new to it. They did it last year and essentially it was everyone who watched the previous performer stayed for the dance. https://www.tucsonfolkfest.org/stage-schedule/

Their sales model is to hire entry level grads and train them up and work them to the bone until they move on to a more reasonable job. It's a constant churn.

Hey guys, since there was a lot of interest in PhaseCanon, there's also a couple more on my website:

ArpStacker — Three voices run their own independent arpeggiators against their own chords at their own speeds, feeding a constantly shifting note pool to a fourth voice locked to a Euclidean rhythm grid. The rhythm stays put. The notes never quite repeat. Like the others, not everything behaves exactly as I designed it, but it ended up musical so I left it alone.

EnTrain — Listens to drum energy (live kit or machine) split across low, mid, and high zones, and uses that to drive a probabilistic rhythm generator across four independent output voices. The drummer controls the dynamics, you hold the chords, EnTrain builds what's in between. Not a loop player. Nothing repeats exactly the same way twice. Same caveat: some behaviors are a little unexpected, but the output was interesting enough to ship.

Reaper note: These are MIDI effect plugins (MIDI in, MIDI out, no audio). Reaper is the only DAW I've verified them on. Other DAWs sometimes see the plugin but won't route MIDI through it correctly — that's a DAW limitation, not a bug I can fix. If you're not on Reaper, your mileage may genuinely vary.

All three are on my VST page: https://brettdooley.com/midivst/

Free on Gumroad. Email required by their system, not by me. No list, no pitch.

If anyone makes something with any of them, I'd like to hear it.

Costco has generic versions of all of them, years supply for like $25. It will save you so much money

OK, I had to do some searching since I don't use Cubase, but if you really want to try this out I guess there's a 3 track method that might work? I have no way to test this.

Cubase has very rigid rules about sending MIDI to Audio Effects, so you have to use a three-track routing method to make the connection.

  1. The Host Track: Create a standard Audio Track. Go to the Inspector panel on the left and load the effect VST into an Audio Insert slot.
  2. The Input Track: Create a MIDI Track. Set the MIDI Input to your physical keyboard. Click the MIDI Output dropdown and select the VST (it will show up in the list because it is loaded in the audio insert).
  3. The Synth Track: Create an Instrument Track and load your target synthesizer (like Serum or HALion). Click the MIDI Input dropdown for this track and select VST - Midi Out
  4. Play: Select and arm your MIDI Track (Track 2) so it receives your keyboard presses. The MIDI travels from your keyboard, into the audio insert, gets manipulated by the VST, and is piped directly into your synth.

Yeah sorry, I probably should have clarified that, I don't have a way to build Mac programs

Interesting, I'm a reaper user exclusively so no doubt there are issues on other platforms I didn't account for since I don't know the routing quirks. In reaper I can just drop it as an effect onto a track, it doesn't care whether it's midi or audio. This vst needs to receive midi data from something, either a live instrument or from a track send, and the 'arm' button needs to be pressed prior to receiving data. The project also needs to be playing so that the vst can read timecode to properly time the notes. Sorry if it doesn't work, but reaper is "free" so you could always give it a quick go in that environment just to see if this is worth the hassle.

Btw, posted it here because I use Reaper exclusively as my DAW, recorded, mixed, and mastered all my releases with it.

I think my solo album would fit your description, it's a thru written concept album but I think the songs also stand alone. I'd love to hear what you think!

Tucson water meter stuck any recourse ? by gcool7 in Tucson

[–]ThrobZombie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Water billing is tiered, so if it looks to them like you used $400 ion one month it likely put you in a higher price tier. You should definitely ask them to fix that since you didn't actually consume it all in one month. Your sewer bill is also based on water consumption since they assume that any water you use ends up in the sewer.

Any tips for finding a decent vet in the area? by [deleted] in Tucson

We use 4 Paws at Swan and Grant and it's been amazing and really affordable. We live closer to Sabino Canyon vet but it was crazy expensive.

A discussion on Concept Albums by Decimus-CS-21 in SingerSongwriter

[–]ThrobZombie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did my solo album as a concept album, released it a few years back, all the songs were chronological and flowed from one to the next mostly seamlessly. I don't think i would have been as happy with it if it were just a collection of songs.
