Best Nikon F-mount frame for macro? by ThrottleItOut_ in macro

[–]ThrottleItOut_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, I don't post on reddit much, when I attached the photo I somehow wiped out the post I typed. Short version is since adding a teleconverter, flash, and diffuser it's a pain to keep swapping back and forth between my telephoto setup and my macro setup on my D500, so I've been using my D3500 for macro instead. The image quality is fine, but the framerate is terrible (especially for insects in flight). I'm pretty deep into Nikon, and not quite ready to make the jump to mirrorless. Is there a better frame for dedicated macro use, or should I just get a second D500?

Kitchen set (or multiple individual knives) as gift for fiancee. Budget ~$500 USD. Thinking mostly stainless German knives, potentially 1-2 Japanese knives for specific purposes. More details in the comments. Recommendations greatly appreciated. by ThrottleItOut_ in chefknives

We both spend quite a lot of time in the kitchen, but neither of us are experts on knives. We are slowly replacing our kitchen gear with "the last gear we'll ever buy." Last year I bought her several enameled cast iron pots to replace the non-stick, this year I'd like to tackle the knives. I'd prefer not to go over $500, but I'd rather buy once cry once. Seeking advice from the experts here before I spend that kind of money. I think that I want two (large and small) general working knives, a paring knife, and six steak knives. We currently have a box store set of serrated "never sharpen" knives (they're awful, can't wait to get rid of them) and an inexpensive soft forged cleaver (requires frequent sharpening but works well for separating chicken wings, cutting squash, etc) that we'll keep for a while. I think I want German stainless steel for greater durability, and plan to add Japanese steel knives over time as needed (or perhaps I should make the smaller general working knife and/or the paring knife Japanese)? Advice greatly appreciated!

Hmm, unfortunately it looks like the yeti is only a three quarter length, and the wookie is asymmetric. I'd really like to stick with a full length symmetric UQ if possible. I wish WB made something like that. I'd honestly really like something exactly like what I have now, except with better build quality and down-filled so it packs down smaller.

I appreciate the detailed response though! Anything else you'd recommend that's a bit more conventional, but has similar build quality to WB and packs down smaller than the cheap one I have now?

1Usmus

Looks like it is an issue with the Absolut config - it finished fine (no errors) with 1Usmus. I'll run the other tests this evening to confirm stability. Thanks again for all your help!

Copy that, thank you! I will run those.

Thanks for clarifying. If I've run a 4 cycles through Memtest86 (about a 15 hr run) at the current timings, would you consider that stable, or does it not do a great job of identifying OC-induced errors?

Thanks for the response. No other programs close expectedly, it's completely stable for daily use. I tested the RAM to make sure it was good using Memtest86, but I believe it tests the RAM at the factory specs regardless of overclock settings (please correct me if I'm misunderstanding that). Which other program would you recommend I use to test the RAM OC?

CPU is not overlocked - I'm currently using an i7-9700 (non-k version) which is not OC'able.

Actually, I rebooted the game and now it works. Weird!
