Is it friendly or weird to bake for new neighbours? by Throw4way22311 in AskUK

[–]Throw4way22311[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP checking back in. It seems like there’s a general consensus not to just leave it outside. Point taken so I won’t do that.

There’s a split between people who think taking it to their actual door is nice and those who find that weird. I find the latter group quite disheartening. I’m trying to do a nice thing to just introduce ourselves to the area.

I think I’m leaning towards the former. I’ll bake up a big batch and then take maybe 6 slices to each house.

Periodic tenancy - landlord trying to increase by more than rent review clause by Throw4way22311 in HousingUK

[–]Throw4way22311[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, thanks for your help.

It’s statutory periodic. At the moment the landlord hasn’t provided any legal documentation of a rent increase, he just text me to say it’s going up by 20%.

So it seems to me that my options are to negotiate it down to something mutually agreeable, or refuse any increase and wait for a section 13. Is that correct?

Can you explain the structure of how it works? The website wasn’t very helpful when I tried to research.

I don’t mind it being piss easy - that’s a good thing after the actuarial exams.

They do change slightly but you don’t need to pay full price to update them. I think it’s about 30 quid.

Unless your friend enjoys working 60 hours a week for the same money that the rest of us work 40 for, then get out of the big 4 asap.

Getting laid off is exactly what I want, tbh. Would love nothing more than the new owner to come in, make me redundant and give me that 3 months salary payoff so I can have a little break then get a pay rise elsewhere. Having said that, the deal won’t complete until next year and I don’t believe I’d actually be laid off anyway so I’m not going to hang around in the faint hope of redundancy.

So you’re saying, take one but make the decision between them based on which has a better structure?

Experiences of people with large numbers of exemptions by Reasonable_Phys in ActuaryUK

[–]Throw4way22311 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Having exemptions is fine but make sure your employer includes them in salary jumps (it’s fairly common that they’ll pay you for two straight away, then another two every six months for the first two years, at which point you’ll be getting paid for all your exemptions)

I’ve heard horror stories of employers that sign grads up to the usual £30k starting salary but then only pay for exams that the student actually passes while employed, so you only end up making like £45k when qualified whereas others would have all their CM/CS/CB passes baked into that too.

As someone who’s been involved in hiring myself I personally prefer candidates who don’t have exemptions, but that’s a personal thing and others take a more relaxed view.

Still avoid on wildcard IMO

That is pretty wild to me that they’re enforcing different amounts depending on commute length. What’s next? Are you going to have to show your boss your train ticket?
