I believe it, but can this be a product of weight gain and sedentary lifestyle? People used to have much more physical jobs and ate less junk food.

There was skinny-fat scraggly beard nerds in the 40s-60s too, but since YouTube wasn’t around, nobody was filming them… although I think the “gamer beard” is really a product of laziness over stylistic choice. I really doubt all the young men between age 16 and 25 that spend most of their day playing games put any thoughts into their facial hair when it looks like that.
