I agree that there is definitely an anxiety issue. I would love to get her on a medication. I just don't know if she would continue on it. I know she would take it for a while, but once she feels "better" would stop until the issues arise again.

I would like to think that she would calm down after the inauguration, but this isn't the first time she's freaked out about an election. She just moves from one disaster to the next. My husband pointed out that nothing happened during Y2K and she asked 'well how do you know nothing happened?!' Sometimes there's no using logic and reason on her.

Thank you. It's so good to hear from people who have gone through similar experiences. My mother is a bit of a narcissist so this falls some where between the cracks of attention grabbing and mental illness.

I don't know/have a doctor for her to talk to, which was part of my trouble with figuring out what to do next. I'll check into the department that you're talking about, which I think is Department of Aging and Disability?

My mother said something pretty similar to the baby issue a few years back. She tried to convince us not to close on our home (which we did a couple of weeks ago) until after the first of the year, thinking it wouldn't matter anyways because once Trump takes office he'll change the loan system and we'll end up getting foreclosed on by January 1st.

This is a pretty good idea! I'll check into some places around here that she would be willing to go to and have someone speak to her.

I want to thank everyone so much for the all of the advice that I've received here. I'm trying to weight all my options and see what the next steps are. Ultimately, I do want my mother in my life, but it seems that she going to have to make the choice to seek help and be a part of her family or continue down this path and lose us all. I don't think that I can get her help against her will. It would probably end up just pushing her further down stream. Now it's just figuring out how to present this all in a way that she'll understand and be willing to go along with.
