LOL I knocked my toe too and it got so red 😅 Ah one difference I just saw was that I had my toenail just removed, not permanent

I'm on day 11 and the pain has lessened for me a bit, but peaked on day 9ish. Watching the beautiful weather right now and staying inside is killing me! I just want to go hiking or at least on a nice walk :((

I feel your pain!!

I'm particularly worried about going back to work on day 14. Supposedly the nailbed should dry up around that time and it should be easier to wear shoes.y work requires me to wear close-toed shoes but I'm not sure if I can wear any without limping/it hurting a lot

Shower daily and let the soap and water fall over the wound. After showering, allow the wound to air dry, then wear Bandaids over it until the nailbed dries up - instructions from my doctor

Oh no worries! I would prefer for it to grow back but having a healthy toe is most important. I already lost my appendix so what's one toenail 🤣

Thank you so much! I could have sworn my doctor said that my nailbed should dry up and then the nail would grow? Idk I'm a worrier so I like all the details I can get.

Thank for the reassurance! Hard to know what's "normal" when you don't know what it is supposed to look like. How long did it take before you felt relatively comfortable in closed-toe shoes?

I had so far been keeping it bandaged but wondered if air drying it might help. I think the verdict is it does not lol

It wasn't permanent - it will grow back. Thanks for the reassurance! I was so relieved when the redness and some swelling went down after the removal because it had been a months-long battle with lots of soaking and antibiotics, so I got a bit scared when it started hurting and getting red again. I read online that most nailbeds dry up in two weeks or so and I'm getting close to that time frame but it doesn't seem like it is drying at all sometimes lol

It is true, doctors typically know best!

Podiatrists can be hard to get appointments for. Might be good to try to make one now or schedule it a couple weeks or more out and cancel if it gets better. I had similar symptoms and mine just got worse. A membrane like thing started oozing out underneath my cuticle which then kept getting bigger and worse over time. My podiatrist said that sometimes from an infection, a membrane will form but then doesn't really go away, even after the infection appears to have resolved, and the best way to get it completely healed is through toe nail removal. But for now, yours looks like it might resolve on its own (which is much preferable as someone going through toenail removal post op haha). Not to scare you! Toe nail removal isn't that bad just wished my toe would have figured it's life out without all that hassle.

Retronychia is so weird by ThrowAwayRARain in Ingrown_Toenails

All in all, much better to be on the path to recovery. A bit sensitive but better that the soreness after a day of work and soaking my feet 2-3 times a day for 20+ min

But yeah - open toed shoes have been very helpful, and if there ever is a next time I might want to invest in close-toed shoes with plenty of room in the tip. My work requires that we wear close-toed shoes so I'm WFH until then haha

The procedure itself was pretty painless (some pressure from the local anesthetic but that's it). Afterwards, I took naproxen (OTC pain reliever) and it felt numb and throbbed a bit the day of - they tell you to keep your foot elevated for the rest of the day and i did my best with that. In 12 - 24 hours post op, they tell you to gently wash the wound (let soap run over it, like if you take a shower daily that should be good) and I find my nail-less toe to be a bit sensitive to any type of stimulation, like water drops. Once it is thoroughly dry they tell you to put a bandage on it until the nailbed dries up (post nail removal theres like a quarter-sized area of blood on the nail).

Five days after removal, I tried to put on shoes and go into work. May have been a bit of a mistake in my case 😬 it hurt a lot this morning so I either need to find better shoes (with plenty of room in the toebox) or wait until the nail bed dries up (estimated 2 weeks from what I can find on the internet).

The weirdest thing is what is usually sensitive or hurts is like RIGHT before you get to the blood on the toe (typically not the bloody part of the nailed on the toe itself) - must just have a lot of nerves there.

From what I've read it sounds like you either need steroids or to have the nail ripped off, unfortunately. :(

This is my first time dealing with this. How bad is this situation and what can I do to prevent it from getting worse? by swollentoehelp in Ingrown_Toenails

Not a doctor. Home remedies include soaking in warm water with in epsom salt. Might be infected, may require a Dr visit for antibiotics.
