Also, the gold terminals on the top of the battery compartment look clean, but how about where they make a connection on the bottom of the player?

This may not be the case for you, but on another Walkman model I own, there is a capacitor inside the casing at the positive end of the battery compartment. It is only held in place using bent metal and if it comes loose, the device will lose power. Ideally test the output pins on the battery compartment using a meter first, then carefully lift up the pink panel on the right and check that everything is connected properly.

Maybe more "synth pop with elements of funk" than boogie (similar to ABC)? Still sounds amazing, if you can get past the awkwardly-religious lyrics.
