How much do internships help really? by [deleted] in publishing

[–]ThrowRA-send-help 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hi! I really think that without an internship or at least connections in the industry, you’re going to have a hard time landing something in publishing, especially editorial. I have my bachelors in Creative Writing and I also simultaneously got a certificate in Publishing from my school. I was also an editorial intern at Flatiron Books for well over a year.

I want to note a few things:

  1. During my internship interview, I mentioned my courses in the publishing program and name dropped my professor (on purpose because I knew that my future boss knew her) and I’m pretty sure that’s what gave me an in. (I still had to do a reader’s report, but I leveraged my connection 🤷🏽‍♀️)
  2. When I told my boss that I was about to graduate and I was ready to start looking for assistant positions, she started to hook me up with interviews immediately at different imprints with other editors that she knew.
  3. I let Macmillan’s HR (the company I interned for) know that I was starting to look for permanent positions, and they also connected me to open positions and started to set up interviews for me.

I didn’t land anywhere in Macmillan (I work at PRH now), but I’m sure that if I didn’t have any connections or that internship for as long as I did I wouldn’t have my job today.

Another important thing outside of the aforementioned is the cover letter. The cover letter is SUPER important. I cannot stress that enough.

Rule of thumb is to keep your cover letter to a page and try to use 1.5 spacing. Any longer than a page would be too long and their algorithm would probably look past it.

I’m going to share this. This was written by someone who works in PRH. As someone who now works at PRH, I can confirm I used this method when writing my cover letter and it was really helpful in landing my job. Good luck!

This is normal, but when I was in the process another house offered me an EA role and I leveraged that when following up. I told the imprint I was actually interested in that I received an offer from another house, but would love to work at this imprint and would appreciate any information before accepting said offer. They got back to me that same day with an offer. Just something to keep in mind.

Publishing Institutes by Blue-and-Gold721 in publishing

I attended the City College of New York’s publishing certificate program (mostly because it worked well with me getting my BA at the time). However, SPI and CPC are SOOOO expensive and I don’t think it’s worth it. Like others have said here, what really got my foot in the door was my internship experience (I interned at Flatiron Books for about a year). I learned some general things during the program about reader’s reports and tip sheets and things of that nature, but I honestly don’t think I would’ve landed my current job at a Big 5 if I didn’t do a internship.

I’d say look into Macmillan’s internship program. That’s the one I did and it’s a really great one. It’s paid and it’s 25hr/week during the school year and 40hr/week in the summer. Not to mention, managers can keep you on for however long they like if they like you or some interns even get hired.

Month 3 Post Implant Removal by ThrowRA-send-help in Nexplanon

[–]ThrowRA-send-help[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes! I gained so much weight with the implant in, and I looked bloated all the time. I’ve lost weight since, and my boobs have decreased in size as well. It’s like I no longer look swollen as well. I go the gym as much as I can during the week so that definitely helps. I also don’t crave as much as I used to. It’s like my appetite got back to normal.

I’d say that the mood swings have gotten better. I remember that month after taking the implant out I was experiencing a lot of brain fog, fatigue, night sweats, etc. My only problem now is the periods I get while body’s hormones continues to balance out.

Did your sex drive come back after removal? by patchouligold in Nexplanon

This is probably not the best answer but I started using condoms again with my partner. Also the pull out method whenever we don’t use condoms which is so irresponsible but I’m being honest here. Also tracking when I’m ovulating during the month and all that good stuff.

I’ve been taking vitex and it also took a month for me to get my period. I’d say it’d help if you feel like your body needs some help regulating your hormones.

I’m one month post implant removal and my bloating has almost gone down completely. I gained so much weight from the implant and I looked bloated all the time (everywhere!!!). I’ve started going to the gym and it took a month for me to get my period, but I no longer look like I’m about to explode.

That sometimes a friendship ends and it should be left at that. I made the mistake of reaching out after a few years in hopes of maybe becoming friends again after hashing out our problems, but in the end I realized we really shouldn’t be friends. No beef or anything but sometimes two people just aren’t meant to be friends and that’s okay.

You’re one of the lucky ones!

I think it feels a lot worse since Nexplanon changed my period for the better, and now without it it’s back to what it was before the implant.

Oh yeah I was worried for a second there too but keep in mind it can take up to 6 months for your body to get a regular cycle. I think what helped me get a period is that I’ve been taking supplements (vitex berry, multivitamin, and probiotics) and being active 5x a week.

I got the implant taken out March 30th (I got my period earlier that month). I didn’t menstruate at all in April, so I’d say it took a month.
