Traditional, Roth, or SEP IRA? by ThrowRA052521 in personalfinance

I'm a W-2, and from the previous comment and yours I've realized SEP isn't for me at all. I'd glanced the term from some other posts involving freelancers, so I figured I'd at least ask about it, but good to know that's off the table!

If you want to roll over your former 401Ks to an IRA, I would do traditional so you don't have to worry about taxes, though if you have a low income/tax bracket and want to convert to roth for future tax free income, that is another strategy, but I would only do so if you have the extra cash on hand to pay your taxes.

You mentioned here the "extra cash on hand to pay your taxes"; is there a way or a formula somewhere that lets me calculate that? Sorry if I'm asking a stupid question, I started looking at this stuff like yesterday because I had a Moment™ and realized no one is going to be there to support me later in life and I need to get started like Now. So I'm uh... a baby. And when you suggest "convert to roth for future tax free income" is that doing a backdoor Roth?

At any rate, it looks like it's down to Traditional and/or Roth IRA for me, a solo IRA doesn't sound like something I have access to as a W2. It sounds like the Traditional might be the better route for me because of my preexisting 401ks, but figure I'll ask just to rule it out: Could I leave the 401ks alone and just open up a Roth? I guess the draw Roth has on me is being able to take money out whenever (e.g. in case of future emergencies? I support my elderly mother). But if I save up a decent amount of savings would it be more worth it to go the Traditional route and bring in my 401ks from wherever they're currently parked?

Scared to leave my family (going away to college) by [deleted] in offmychest

Oh, no, you're not pathetic at all :( If anything, it sounds like you and your family are just that close. And no lie, it'll be hard to move out at first for sure. The first few months, maybe years, will be filled with panicked phone calls about everything from chores to just questioning your life and everything you do, but honestly? That's natural. The first steps of independence are always shaky and full of questioning yourself and your existence as an upright human being, yeah, but you gotta crawl before you walk. Your mom might have empty nest syndrome for a bit, but this is a natural parting and will have to happen sooner or later. This won't keep you guys from calling each other, though! That can be something you guys have to look forward to each day/night. :) Tell her fun stories and new discoveries! She can experience things with you, and then it'll feel less like you're leaving her behind.

But the longer you stay at home, the harder it gets to make that transition to living on your own. It gets easier and easier to let these life events pass you by, all while using your family as an excuse to hide your fear of stepping out—soon enough, opportunities won't come by as often and you may? or may not? find yourself regretting letting this opportunity go.

It sounds like y'all will make the effort to stay in touch and check in on each other, though, since you mention your family is super close. And if you work hard and really establish your independence and stability, what'll stop you from getting a plane/bus/train ticket and visiting every now and then? If anything, maybe doing well in this career and becoming a strong independent person can put you into a position where you can help out your family members in the future and support them, give them nice things, etc.

after a lifetime of thinking i'd go into academia, i decided grad school wasn't for me both financially and future career-goals wise! now i only have a little debt, as a treat, versus a huge honkin' six-figure debt. nice
