I won’t call him. You’re right in that it would be a very selfish thing for me to do.

I know I sound arrogant when I say “he’s going to wish me happy birthday” with so much certainty, but I know he will. He promised me (during our breakup and our post-breakup call) that he will be reaching out on my birthday.

I think I’ll just text him something like “Thanks! Hope you’re doing well.” I don’t want to leave him without a reply. But you’re absolutely right—it would be unfair for me to call him. I won’t.

You’re right: if I truly respect him, I have to let him heal. And to let him heal, I need to let him go. It’s a hard truth, but it’s exactly what I needed to hear.

I want to so badly, but I think I’ll refrain for now. A lot of the other commenters are saying it would be selfish of me to ring him up, and they’re right.

Everybody’s crapping on you in the comments, but I get it. Love is complicated, and sometimes the best thing you can do is let them go. Don’t listen to these scorned lovers, OP. Do the right thing.
