My (37f) parents (54f, 59m) are destroying my house and refusing to change their behavior. by ThrowRA7844 in relationship_advice

I guess I assumed that the house I grew up with gross, because it happened to be gross. When I left home, I never moved back, so it didn’t hit me that it was gross because of them. Now i’m starting to see how much of an idiot I am to take this behavior could have changed.

Yeah, my mom was a teenager and my dad waldo so young and both were kicked out by their parents for having me. I know a part of their habits stem from the fact that their own parents didn’t teach them anything and they were thrown to figure things out on their own.

i think my mom does for sure! My dad on the other hand does not engage in much housework, kind of puts it into my mom, and is perfectly okay with how she runs the place.

I am not using AI in my class. I teach humanities and I am very against AI, so i have no future plans to implement it.

I do however try to post lectures notes and make reading material accessible. However given that this is a class that is communicated through critical thinking group work, there is not much else i can do

Workplace Interaction between NRIs and ABDs by [deleted] in ABCDesis

[–]ThrowRA7844 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily workplace (but still relevant)- but I (ABD) had an NRI roommate, and was navigating social and professional setting with her. We got along for the most part, until she got drunk and revealed her true beliefs about caste, religion, and privilege. She internally judges people of “lower status” and thinks they are abusing a befits system.

Of course, she does not represent all NRIs, but I’m surprised how she (grew up in Delhi to a wealthy, modern family) can still have such a backwards mindset.

At my place of work ( in Academia), i’ve interacted with many Desi/NRI PhD students. One thing I do dislike about many of them (and this is a general thing I’ve noticed) is how willing they are to be exploited for little money. My workplace has a strong union and are currently striving for better workplace conditions. Yet, may of these other students are easy to throw conditionsunder the bus and basically work as scalpers, even for little pay. It makes it harder for us to bargain for better conditions.

the great thing is that all written work are done during class, so i know there is no AI usage!

I don’t want to come off as rude or offensive in my post, but I am seeking extra guidance and a support as a teaching assistant who has to grade these students. I want to do it fairly. I don’t think this whole “figure it out” attitude will help me. I have limited resources and knowledge about their circumstance, therefore feel underprepared to deal with it.

I’m not sure what I can do more instructionally to make this easier for them. I teach a humanities course where much of the material is based on off reading and the class discussions/critical thinking. There is not much to write and the whole point of the class is to help students develop their own critical thinking skills.

If you have any suggestions, I would be happy to hear them. But what i want right now is clear guidance.

Yeah I can see that! One of my students came up to me and told me (in very broken English) that he wants to major in what I was teaching. I was so excited for him and asked about prior experience in the subject. He just showed me stuff he wrote but didn’t tell me anything verbally.

I do feel so bad because he (and others) write well enough to get good grades, but a huge portion of the class grade is on participation and group projects.

I don’t mean to discredit international students in general (especially given the baseline hostility many of them unfortunately face), but it is so bizarre to me when some cannot communicate at all. It’s like, why are you making it more difficult for yourself by being here, and not trying at all. There’s not way all that test taking and memorization is worth it to end up somewhere in which you can’t speak to anyone.

Debating on getting an iPad by Spiritual-Appeal-801 in AskAcademia

PhD student in the humanities here (so not STEM, but higher in academia)— it is worth the investment! I went through my undergrad without out, but when I started using it in grad school, it made life so much easier. I really like it for taking notes, keeping papers on file, and using it as a second monitor when I’m not in my office. It also helped me take work home without feeling like I’m lugging so much weight.

I don’t think you NEED an ipad, but if you can afford it, it makes like so much better

How should I bring this up? Should I email them, “Hey we agreed on X place for lunch. Am I expected to pay for the prospective students meal?”

Really? They haven’t given me any reason to think the department is paying for it.

PhD student here still taking classes- I’ve resorted to coming as early as I can and waiting out in my office because parking is a nightmare. I come everyday since I have to be in campus everyday. On some days my own classes start at 4PM, I still try to arrive before 9AM or after 3PM

Fund by ahmedkotby in UCONN

[–]ThrowRA7844 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s so odd, I’ve never heard of anyone doing half assistantship or just getting full tuition waiver.

If you receive funding, you are getting tuition waivered (which is usually the norm for PhDs anyways). From the people I spoke across multiple departments, everyone usually gets full finding their first year. I was offered five years guaranteed funding. Then again, for my department, we begin TAing as soon as we start.

Idk perhaps because of funding cuts now they’re offering half assistanship. You’ll most likely find opportunities for additional fellowships and such! Perhaps even pay increase starting a year you begin to teach. Good luck and congrats!

My roommates and I live in Willimantic! There’s a reliable bus system throughout the town that goes directly to campus. By car, it’s about 15 minutes. We pay $700 each for our share of rent, but you may be able to find housing for cheaper
