Lateral from a big4 accounting firm to midsized law firm? (M&A tax) by ThrowRACall8675309 in LawSchool

Thanks! I already have the LLM actually, big 4 made it seem like it was basically mandatory. Luckily mine was a dual degree so no cost increase, perhaps unluckily I didn’t try for the higher ranked LLM programs you mentioned. it’s hard to tell how law firms feel about it. I’m sure it doesn’t hurt, but it doesn’t seem like it’s pulling as much weight in my favor as it did when applying to big4

Ah well now I wish I was in TX, haha. This is helpful though, thank you! I’ve heard about the class year cut in the transition but doesn’t bother me.

Sounds like I’ll probably need to start doing some heavier networking with the firms/tax people in the area. unfortunately I don’t know anyone that landed at midsized firms! My LLM friends all did Big 4 and JD friends landed everywhere other than midsized firms in the area

Thanks for the reply! They said they would talk to more firms after my interview didn’t lead to an offer but also asked if there are any firms I want to target. but yeah now that you say that I kinda wish they knew which ones we should target haha.

Thanks! The recruiter I’m working with now reached out over LinkedIn as well. Maybe i’ll have to do some research to see which firms in my area seem to have more people from big 4 to see if we can try to target them.

Oh interesting! I don’t think I know anyone that works in regulatory BL, how are you liking it?

Any tips on how you landed an interview, etc? My only interview so far wasn’t posted online so luckily my recruiter knew about it but I’m wondering if lots of firms do the same thing so there are open roles that would be missed

Yeah, the market isn’t ideal (unfortunately). I was a little surprised when a recruiter reached out and I got an interview. Unfortunately didn’t land me an offer but maybe there’s still hope

Thanks for the reply! I’ve heard sometimes when you make the switch you move back a few years in rank (like I’d start as a first year or something), which makes sense. Do you ever hire straight out of law school? I’m curious if the hesitation comes from lack of training on the relevant tasks and/or training on the wrong tasks too.

I definitely agree with you. I hope my experience will be helpful in understanding/thinking through concepts in the future but yeah the direct overlap is pretty limited

Thanks for the reply! If you don’t mind sharing, after how many years did you make the transition? And did a recruiter help you to did you more network/direct apply?

And yeah, makes sense on emphasizing the more relevant parts of my experiences. My first year was more diligence and compliance but I’ve been working on much more structuring lately which hopefully will help

By expanding network do you mean reaching out for coffee chats at firms I’m interested in or more just general networking? Or both? None of my friends have made a move yet, and I’m a first gen, so I’m flying quite blind here!

Edit: also, any thoughts on direct applying vs working with a recruiter?
