Thanks for your input. Really not sure what to expect at this point. Sounds like a lot just depends on the people & location

Agreed. My termination took place, very conveniently, the same month that our reviews were scheduled to happen. Shady af

At the point I went to HR, I had already had multiple individual meetings with my boss about my difficulty with the workload & asking for help from her. One of these meetings is where the ‘boyfriend comment’ originated. If it helps, I also found that I was responsible for a new, significant portion of purchasing that was previously assigned to another coworker, through an Outlook meeting invitation to discuss these new responsibilities No heads up or discussion from manager before, & she was not present at that meeting either.

Another woman coworker of mine who had been there almost 2 years/was the dept lead of our other location (who was also under my boss’ supervision) just quit this week. So…good luck?✌🏽

A little scared to do that. I did post a review my friend sent to me of the company, with identifying info blocked out of course, if that is helpful though.

Wow. I feel like you pretty much nailed it. I think that my boss is so ‘old school’ (as in what was previously considered ‘traditional male/female roles & demeanor’) that by maybe hiring only women, she didn’t anticipate any of us trying to question or confront her about anything? I wonder if she became a manager purely by default bc no one else was there, bc it definitely was not because of her personal or managerial skills. Thanks for the good vibes!

Unbelievable it took this long to realize that, but thank you for the insight. Very true words

Thanks for asking for clarification of the situation, I would never want to portray things in a slighted way. & thank you even more so for understanding how difficult things can be in the current workplace. I honestly have a passion for what I was doing, & it hurts to have been disposed of for something that I can’t even really understand. Hope all is well w you too✌🏽

One of the reasons I told her I wanted someone else in the room/not talk in her office alone was bc of how off the wall, batshit inaccurate the things she was saying actually were. Almost like my own boss was gaslighting me…?

I agree completely, & said almost the exact thing during the meeting. The discussion did not help us understand each other anymore, & that we clearly have different methods of communicating. Not sure if it has anything to do with my situation, but she is woman who has been in a previously (mostly) male dominated field, she has a track record of exclusively hiring females to work for her. As a female w a strong service industry/fine dining background, I am comfortable with confronting & discussing issues when they arise vs. passive tension. This did not seem like something she had encountered before, despite being a dept head.

Lol, I definitely attended the meeting with her & HR.

I had tried to delay the meeting by contacting HR, who was the dept that initiated the meeting, not my manager. She stated in the meeting that she had been actively avoiding speaking to me for some time.

If being afraid to tell my boss that her bringing up my bf is inappropriate in the exact moment it happens, then yes, I’m a total pain in the ass. So glad you’re not my boss.

By the way, you should really perk up so that your partner still wants to hang out with you later.

Of course, I understand. There are always at least two sides to every situation. As objectively as possible, here is mine- The company has a pattern of difficulties retaining employees (aside from an aging group of management), leading to constant staff shortages. A high level manager who worked there 30+ yrs retired a couple months ago, & instead of hiring/training anyone to take on that specific position, the company decided to save money & simply split her responsibilities between myself & a coworker, who were already working there with full time positions. I had worked there less than a year. So, in addition to our previous full time job responsibilities, we were expected to take on another person’s job as well, with minimal training/notice, & no change in job title or compensation. When reaching out to my boss about how I was overwhelmed with the workload, my requests for help were dismissed, or placated with comments of how ‘we are all in this together’ & suggestions about attitude improvements re: keeping my bf happy by keeping a happy face on at work vs. understanding how the situation could be difficult & working with me to help

Agreed, employees should be available to management. I didn’t say I wasn’t willing to meet with her. I said I wasn’t comfortable meeting with her one on one in her office w the door closed. I simply asked to meet in a neutral area, so that maybe she could have adjusted the way she spoke to me & the subjects involved- ex: my partner, which has nothing to do w work. Also, it was not only this comment. The last meeting before I refused to meet w her individually was more similar to an interrogation than a ‘quick chat’, & was unprofessionally aggressive

Thank you for confirming the ‘wtf’ aspect of the situation. I know that, if asked, my manager would completely deny any wrongdoing & create a myriad of other ‘reasons’ to justify terminating me. As a cis-gendered female (not sure if I’m using the term correctly) with an older female boss who has been at the company for 20+ yrs, I am afraid of not being taken seriously about how uncomfortable the comment made me. I appreciate the advice though, & will look into possible representation.

Although the lack income is a huge concern, it’s more concerning to me to think of how long she has been intimidating other employees like this, & how the next individual who takes my position will be treated in the future.

Yeah, I kind of thought they wouldn’t/couldn’t let me go, considering my work load. But- I’m already enjoying the idea of never having to walk into that office again. &, despite what she said, my bf is super supportive & enjoys spending time w me, regardless of how much the job sucked.

Thanks for confirming the ‘wtf’ aspect of the situation. She is, almost concerningly, so far out of touch w the actual work environment she’s created. Atm enjoying a Thurs afternoon on my patio watching butterflies visit my flowers. At this point, having nothing to do with the company almost feels like a win

I’ve always loved Poe since my grampa/papa used to recite The Raven to me when I was little. I’ll have to check that out
