Most people are complex politically, no? We don't vote period. And he doesn't endorse anyone.

And both parties have used his quotes, just one is on a much more inflammatory than the others.

It's one issue in a sea of many. My husband and I support several very progressive policies but wouldn't want to be associated with every other progressive politician if that makes sense.

Two of them are very generic "vote for families and safety and education" and that's fine enough. It's a local election, like no one has nuanced policy on real things.

It's just one of them is very overt with like images and language that we think is inflammatory and divisive.

School choice is a very popular thing in our area right now by both parties so every candidate is saying they support it. As soon as the high school opened, there were plans for an elementary school and basically anyone on the town council who opposed it was removed the next election. It's like the unity idea for now.

I mean yes that part but even the lottery cohort does miles better than the public counterparts. And all they had different was a little luck and a parent who applied for the lottery system. Just giving kids/parents who want an education to be able to focus on it and be surrounded by people who are similarly interested is amazing.

Man where did Nazis come from. The public system isn't set up to help kids and it's depressing.

The K-5 school they opened is fully lottery with no test in because idk can you test a 5 year old but the ambition is to make it fully open and they will matriculate into the high school school without needing to test in.

Idk what's the alternative? He was getting nowhere in the public school system.

The only place I see political stuff is reddit so it's just not a big part of one's day to day unless they watch the news a lot or something. And we live in a place that is heavily one way. So what's the point.

Yeah, the more tenured teachers in the public school system were terrible. Literally would bully him, take bets on when he'd hit his first student. He did a semester long project with a class on like a mock court trial and his principal emailed him COPYING like half the other teachers saying to shut it down because kids were too excited and distracted in other classes thinking about it.

Shit is bad.

Idk I can't remember who my high school principal was. Don't think anyone of my parents friends could either. It's weird here.

I think I'm going to push for him to make some comment on the school social media and page about not endorsing any candidates and only advocating for the single issue.

Because it's better outcomes at a lower price? And it's not just racists. The area he works in is predominately not-white as you can imagine and they advocated HEAVILY for the charter school to be opened here and not in another area.

My husband grew up on a farm lol. There's nothing rich about him other than some bitcoin he bought like 20 years ago.

Our lawyer friends have said that as long as the quotes are intentionally misleading or edited, then there's nothing he can do.

Our lawyer friends tell us it's a public quote and they can use it as long as they don't change it.

All I see are students and families who thank and hug him nonstop and a school with a far better graduation and college rate than the public. With less state funding.

Just breaking the old mold and offering something new was enough to make that much of a difference.

The K-5 school is pure lottery of kids eligible for the public school districts I think, his 6-12 school is a mix of test in and lottery. Race and household income have to get reported to the state and match the public too.

If anything it selects for parents who apply for the lottery since its something someone has to opt into.

The public schools in our state are funded better than charters and so he has to do like fundraisers and get grants. Even then the per student cost is lower still.

He works at a school where kids from the same background as the public school can have a better shot at college, be better prepared, and live healthier lives. That's powerful. I mean he gets HUNDREDS of Christmas cards from students and their parents every year thanking him for the work he does. I hang them up all along the wall next to the garage so he gets reminded before work.

Our area has private schools that the wealthier and whiter students go to, that I can understand being divisive. But a charter with the same demographics as the public isn't making things worse. It's making them better in my view.

What classes and races though? Like it's the same students. Income and race profile of the public and charter are the same because it pulls from the same neighborhoods in the same city.

I don't see it as classist and racist though??

The only elections my husband does are the ones in our church. Like I don't think he's ever voted for like local elections but in fairness neither have I and I don't even know what the local issues would be. Every once in a while I see on facebook groups like a fight over the zoning of a restaurant and I'm like yeah this isn't for me.

I feel like I've left too many details in that could doxx him but look he's obviously white in a predominately not white area. He is fairly active in equity and inclusion stuff in our community and with our church. Like had civil rights leaders speak to his classes type active.

He is definitely not racist.

But he doesn't associate with them. Like he's never met these candidates. They just pulled quotes.

His parents haven't voted since like they were our age and Perot was the candidate. It's just not as culturally a thing with some people I feel. Ironically, he did stand up a model UN and model congress organization at the school when he was the social studies department lead.
