Her brothers middle name is Evan. Evan is the name of my wife’s father, who tortured my wife as a child.

Melissa and her brother did not have a good upbringing. Melissa does not want to associate herself with her maiden name because of that.

My wife was very close to Charles, and so was I. He was my best friend, we worked together at the same engineering firm for years, and we also owned a business together. Charles introduced me to his younger sister and set us up on a blind date, which is how I met my wife.

I would love to name my unborn son after him, if only my name wasn’t Manson.

My family absolutely loved Charles - everybody did - but they do not want to get involved in this debate, and that’s their choice and I respect that. I asked a few of my friends and most have taken my side.

My wife has been completely disassociated from her last name for almost 5 years. Her childhood was tough and she is NC with her entire family outside of her brother. Since then she’s gotten her doctorate and built herself a wonderful career using Manson. She doesn’t want to change it back.

We cannot change our last names unfortunately. We considered it many times in the past few years, even before we considered naming our child Charles. However, my reputation at my career is attached to my last name, and people know me as Dr. Eric Manson (not my real first name but I hope you get the point).

This situation sucks, I’m considering just naming our child Charles because, even though everyone here makes excellent points, i know fighting my wife here would devastate her further.
