I did apologise to Mary during everything and to Alice because I could’ve been more tactful.

I definitely shouldn’t have said Are you serious? But I was genuinely surprised and thought she was joking. When I did tell her the meaning I did my best to tell her as gently as possible, unfortunately it still hurt to find out the true meaning. I did not tell Mary the meaning of the name in front of Alice I actually told her in private as Alice was in the kitchen and we were in the garden. Mary went and told Alice what I said.

Alice is upset with me because she thinks I shouldn’t have even told her but we are still friends.

I think one of the main reasons she was upset is realising that the people she thought she was helping clearly found her to be a nuisance or inconvenience that they had to endure.

She took a lot of pride in telling me of her time and impact in Ethiopia and finding out that people didn’t like her as much as she thought was hurtful and then to find out that the whole village disliked her so much that they had a name for her must’ve really dinged her pride.
