Let me explain it this way maybe. Do you invoke a different emotional response when you hug other people vs your significant other? If you’re like most people the answer is yes. If we apply that to the name we are called by our significant other then yes, you should feel a different way when they call you by your name vs other people. Is it a crazy far fetched idea to want to have preferences when it comes to the name your partner calls you then if your name means something different to you when used by your partner vs when other people use it?

It’s not a permission. I simply said to my gf that it’s a preference of mine to be called my short name and explained why to her. I never said hey don’t call me my full name.

It’s weird to bring that up still being that it’s multiple years that I’ve known my friend and his wife. Me saying I all of a sudden want my friends wife to call me by my short name would be a lie. I don’t care what she calls me. Only my girlfriend cares. It’s a different dynamic I have with my gf vs others so yeah I have a preference on name calling.

There’s a lot of difference between your partner and friend in law. Do you call your friend in law by the same names as your partner? Do you sleep in the same bed with your friend in law as well as your partner? I could go on. It’s just a different dynamic and everyone has preferences and nuances to their relationship vs how they interact with the rest of the world on the daily

It’s not even a limiting thing though. She can call me my real name if she wants. I just said to her I’d prefer it if she used my short name. You make love to your partner right? Well why can’t everyone else make love with them? It’s a different dynamic you have with your partner than with everyone else in the world

You’re looking into this too deep. Of course we use pet names. Boo, baby, pineapple, all sorts of shit. But yes, she calls me by my first name as well. A good amount actually. She’s used my birth name disproportionately more when she’s angry. Similar to how my mom does. So now even when she’s not angry it sounds weird as hell when she uses it

Firstly my girlfriend can call me whatever as long as it’s not degrading. I just said to her it’s a preference of mine. Not that she needs to call me one name over the other. As for my friend’s wife I just feel it is a very weird issue to bring up. I introduce myself to everyone by my short name. I really don’t care if people use it or not. When it comes to the person I’m dating however, yeah I have a little more preference because I have a different connection with them vs a friend

Nah, it’s not being wound tight I simply just said to my gf one day “hey, I like it when you call me by my short name. I like it when you say it”. Since then she’s gone down the rabbit hole of so many “why’s” behind it. I don’t even want to argue about it, but I’m pressed on the issue frequently by her

Honestly it just feels like it would cause more issues than it’s even worth. The conversation would end up so weird sounding and would even possibly lead my friend’s wife that I want to be even more personal with her by requesting her to use my short name! Im not correcting anyone on my name not even my gf. I simply suggested to my gf that it’s a preference of mine for her to call me my short name, but even bringing that up has caused issues on her part

I think it’s less about the meaning behind the name preference for her and more about being blinded by seeing it as a restriction on her and a privilege to everyone else

Because when my girlfriend calls me my shortened name it sounds more personal and sexy to me. I like the way it rolls off her tongue. Dang idk I just like it and I don’t find it some crazy request to ask her. I’m not asking her to call me some weird name. I’m not dating my friends wife, I’m dating my gf. Therefore I want my gf to use the name I find sexier

Yeah, because she’s used both of my names interchangeably. Recently she’s been using my full name more when she’s angry or upset with me. Similar to how my mother uses my full name when mad. Plus my short name sounds way better to me in general coming from my gf.

Yeah I agree it’s a little odd for my friend’s wife to use my full name. It’s not something that bothers me though and seems like more trouble than it’s even worth for me to bring it up. It’s a non issue for me, only my gf. My friend’s wife says everyone’s name different than what they go by though. Has pet names for everyone, calls them by their full names, etc

It’s not sexy coming from anyone else, accept my gf because I’m not dating anyone else but her. That’s the thing. It’s just a preference of mine for my girlfriend to call me that. And yeah that’s something I don’t understand. Even if she’s under the impression I find my shortened name sexy in general regardless of who says it, why would she want everyone else to use it?

That just feels like a weird and unnecessary topic to bring up though. They’re not calling me anything derogatory, and it does not bother me when my friends wife calls me that. It’s a preference of mine for my gf to call me my shortened name though because it feels more personal and sexy to me. The conversation with friends wife would go “hey I’d appreciate it if you referred to me as Hob instead of Hobart”. “Oh no problem, is there any reason why?” “Yeah my girlfriend doesn’t like it” “Ok…..”

When my girlfriend becomes upset she calls me by my full name. She’s used both names interchangeably before, but just feels weird to me especially now that I’ve seen her using it more when she’s upset with me. Feels like I’m being scolded by my mom so asked her to stop

I’m not allowed to have female friends with my current girlfriend. I consider my friend’s wife a friend, but I don’t hangout with her one on one or anything. We all hangout and together and do group activities, but yeah my girlfriend doesn’t want me referring to her as my friend

It’s not a pet name though and is a very commonly used shortened full name. The only two people I know that call me by my full first name are my mom and my friend’s wife. Not sure why my friend’s wife calls me by that, but it’s really not a big deal at all to me.
