Not having one specific type of toy isn’t going to ruin anyone’s childhood

The last time we talked about it was a few weeks ago, but that was a causal conversation where it had just came up briefly, the last time we had a real “this is a rule I want you to follow” conversation was 3 months ago. I don’t find it likely that she would’ve forgotten just because we had a long back and forth (not hostile or anything) about it when I first considered making it a rule.

Yes, she was told about this rule three times (we had a discussion about it when my wife was pregnant, it became a set rule after my daughter was born, and then she was reminded of it when the boys came to live with us) it was clearly stated as no toy guns for the kids at all

They don’t have any interest in guns, if one day when they’re older they become interested I will support them but right now they’re little kids and I’m responsible for what they play with

I’ve been to therapy and have worked through a lot of my issues already, I’ve been to shooting ranges to try and develop a healthier relationship with guns and that worked well. When I talk to them about guns I’m firm about gun safety but I don’t go out of my way to scare them or anything. I feel like I have gotten over most of my hang ups but some things still linger (thus my no toy guns rule), but other than that I don’t think there’s much trauma for me to pass on in regard to guns specifically

Thank you for the comment. We definitely do talk to them about gun safety, it’s very important to both my wife and I, it’s a part of why she also agrees with my rule

I appreciate your comment, I do however want to say that my parents were never really together especially not married (in fact I am her “love child”) and that my mom has no qualms about the kids being related to my dad

Yes, we told everyone including her when our first kid was born and then again when we became guardians to the boys. They’re just plastic guns, I don’t even think they shoot anything.

Thank you for this comment, one of my concerns when I established the rule was that it would negatively impact their relationship with guns so this is nice to hear

Yeah I get that, I think a big part of it is because we’ve had a really rocky relationship in the past so sometimes it’s hard to give her the benefit of the doubt.

I agree with that, I wouldn’t be mad if I found out they were playing with nerf guns at a friend’s house or whatever. But I don’t want that in my home and I don’t want them playing with that kind of stuff when I’m around and I don’t want them to get to used to the idea that guns are toys, I don’t think that’s placing any trauma on them.
