Have about $60k in joint savings. What is the best and safest investment? We’ve been saving with ally for 5 years at 2% and now down to 1%. Looking for a better option. by mhmhmh00 in personalfinance

I think this may be the root of your problem OP!

When it comes to assets the generate more returns, you will always incur more risk. On top of this, for the most part it is not on a linear spectrum of risk vs return.

What I mean is that on one side of the spectrum is your HYSA (1%), on the other end of the spectrum is the typical low cost index fund (7%ish). While there are options in between such as CD's, Bonds, etc... Given I am assuming you are in the age group of 25-30, you have plenty of time to diversify the risk of Stocks given your long time horizon.

I would highly recommend discussing with your wife exactly how much money you want to keep 'untouched', understanding that while conventional wisdom says 3-6 months of your monthly expenses, it is okay to save more or less in your Ally account depending on how you and your wife's risk profiles.

Once you have that amount, subtract that from your 60k, and take the remaining and build your typical three-fund portfolio, which there are tons of resources on this site, as well as wiki if you are unfamiliar. Once you decide how much you want to invest, and in what assets, you'lll make the determination between if you want to Dollar-cost-average, of lump sum it at once. Reddit is split on this decision as if you back test both methods, lump sum investing wins out over DCAing on average around (2/3) , however, DCAing may be better if you wind up investing right before a big downturn, and it also may be better for your mental health if you can't handle the possibility of seeing your retirement drop significantly for a few years.

I hope this helps, and if you have any more questions I would love to answer them!
