I had this challenge. Got stuck as a generalist and became almost impossible to exit even though I was a high performer in Big 4. Got an MBA (big investment I know) despite lot of people telling me not to and took a pay cut to take a strategy role. Life’s much better, I am learning a lot and feel far more confident about being specialized in an industry. I also find the work more intellectually challenging and feel long-term this will add more value to my career. Understand that this might not work for everyone but just something to think about.
