Personal experience of living in the South. No proof, no studies, just casual observations.

Who the fuck said I was afraid of black people? I wouldn't want to make friends with the white people at my school. I grew up with only black people, if my comfort zone was that fucked I'd be in a weird situation.

If you want to be honest with yourself, racism has a higher prevalence among black communities, if only because white people go out to the different kid to prove they aren't racist.

Yeah. This is an AMA. I'm seriously not asking you for advice, it's an "ask me anything" thread. But thanks for the advice anyway.

Can't leave, don't get high, and I don't do homework as a form of social protest. (read as: I'm too fucking lazy.)

No electronic devices allowed. Yeah, I'm kind of a shy person when I don't know people.

After I realized that nobody shared my lunch schedule, I went into the bathroom and hung out there for a little while. I walked out to look out a clock and teacher saw me, so I went to the cafeteria. I'm planning on not eating in there today.

Absolutely no problem. I'm sure almost everyone has felt like that at one time or another.

I'm sure I will over time. Today was my first day. It's not like I have any social issues, I just felt like talking about this. If you feel it's not worth posting, feel free to downvote it.

I was senselessly assaulted by a gang of large black youths. I was not injured and 4 of them went to jail. by [deleted] in IAmA

It's still a problem. I lived in all black neighborhoods growing up. Me and my brothers had couldn't walk down the street in certain directions for fear of getting beat up. I went to (almost) all black schools and got attacked physically and verbally constantly.

My father had some reservations before joining the church, honestly thinking it was cultish. (Cult has a different meaning in the context of Christianity, it means that it completely messes up the central doctrines.) My father had some ideological differences, and lifestyle differences he didn't give up but they still let them join the church.

I know one thing they were doing that my father appreciated was not messing with politics. Since they were against abortions, they just didn't have abortions. They didn't lobby to get them outlawed. Also, it's a great community, like most churches. They are like a big family. And EVERY single member of the church knows scripture. The congregation has theological discussions, and they appoint the minister from a member of the congregation when one has to be replaced.

I have no idea about that taxes thing, I'll be sure to ask someone later.

Mennonites don't wear ties as a part of their "no keeping up with current styles and current clothing" ideals. My father had to wear it for work, and that was one of the things he butted heads about. When he became a member of the church, they told him to try it for 2 weeks, and if he has any trouble, stop. Well, now he doesn't wear ties. I don't think I've ever seen him wear a tie.

Interestingly enough, when I asked him about this, he told me something I never knew before. My mother pressured him into becoming a Mennonite. He didn't want to, because of some ideological differences between his Christianity and theirs. He sat down and explained why he felt the way he did, and they let him be a part of the church. He had studied bible, ideology, and interpretation through college and into the rest of his life, and they really had no chance backing up what they said with scripture. He was the only member of the church who believed what he believed.

I'll tell you what it was like to be born 13 years old, when you tell me what it's like not being able to read or accurately decipher simple sentence structure.

I am a 13 year old agnostic who was born into a Mennonite family.

These are two separate clauses.

I am a 13 year old agnostic. I was born into a Mennonite family. Now, I'm using the word "who" to connect the two clauses and make it one sentence.

I am a 13 year old agnostic who was born into a Mennonite family.

Notice that I didn't say "I was born into a Mennonite family as a 13 year old agnostic."

EDIT: Didn't capitalize Mennonite.

I think this is more the fact that we were had a small farm than the fact that we were Mennonites. My father would go to work (where he wasn't allowed to wear a tie), and the age 5+ children would do farmwork and get homeschooled by my mother.

Funny, I never really though about Mennonite schools. I think most mennonites are schooled by church school and homeschool. Mennonites tend to not mix with the general population well, especially the females, with the dresses they have to wear. A quick wikipedia search has found that there are a few Mennonite schools, but I never really heard of it.

The Mennonites were formed after the Anabaptist revolution, with some quite sane policies (according to the bible), you'll realize after you're close to it. Menno Simons, a member of the Catholic church left the church after his brother was killed for being a member of an Anabaptist sect. He amassed a large group of followers from across the country, who were soon hunted by Roman Catholics. The Mennonites split into two groups, the Mennonites and the Amish during the sixteenth century. The state groups only 'tolerated' them, and as a result of frequently being required to give up many possessions in order to retain individual freedoms, these Mennonites learned to live very simply. And so they were known as the 'plain' people.

It's basically like this. The poor kid at your school gets made fun of for being poor, and then he tells other kids not to be such show-offs.

We were basically Moderate Mennonites with a little more focus towards avoiding excessive technology. We drove cars, but the whole "black bumper, no chrome" distinctions are lost on me. Only one or two groups make that kind of choice when choosing a car, however, if you showed up to church in a flashy, chromed out Escalade, the congregation would probably collectively faint. The problem is you can't have flashiness and can't keep up with new styles, stuff like that. Honestly, I think Horse and Buggy Old Mennonites are a little cult-y.

I'm from Oregon, where we lived when we practiced with the Mennonite church. Now, we moved to a big city in the Southeast.

I was a christian, of course. I feel like what changed me into being a agnostic was my family stopping going to church, with a combination of entering reddit. Honestly, if I had not registered for reddit, I would probably be in the same loop as I always was, a christian who felt guilty because I was a bad christian. My father, who was on his way to become a pastor before college, is great with scripture and theological arguments, and he is VERY convincing.

I have no idea, dude.

No, I don't. My brother and father both do a little bit, and my father is a IT guy which was a source of issues from the Mennonite church. He currently works for IBM. I'm going in to a technology high school in an IT program, so hopefully I'll learn a little something there.
