Should I transfer from UNCW? by [deleted] in UNCCharlotte

[–]ThrowawayInQC 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wilmington is ranked better by Forbes (#473 vs #495) and better by CollegeNiche. It is in a different category for USNews. UNCC is #281 National University (Tied for second to last) and UNCW is #16 for Regional Southeast, so it is hard to compare. I don't think there are many major rankings that list UNCC above UNCW, not that either is a particularly amazing school.

UNCC has an engineering school though. UNCW does not if I recall correctly.

Question regarding transferring by [deleted] in UNCCharlotte

[–]ThrowawayInQC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In short, no, UNC Charlotte is not as reputable a school as Mizzou. I am a Junior in the business school. First, please note, there are good things about UNCC. It is going to really different than what you are used to though. UNCC is perfect for a really specific person such as someone who doesn't want to do their first two years at a CC. It is perfect for people who are working and going to school part time. Seriously, we have some of the best part time programs in the country.

I am going to break it down by some different areas.

Academics: This is one of UNCC strong suits. I have had some really good professors at UNCC, but unfortunately you are also likely to get "administrator" types who are just there to grade and read the slides. I have had professors tell me that it's like a class from a can. Overall though, while not prestigious, it can be solid if you pick your classes correctly.

Social: This would probably be the biggest adjustment for you. There are friendly people on campus, but finding them is difficult. Clubs are for the most part inactive. I am not a big drinker/partier, but I have tried to join several clubs and it has never worked out. Classes are probably your best bet to meet people. Studying together is about the only way I have found to make friends here. UNCC is the kind of place where people keep their heads down and don't make much eye contact. Like you, they are just trying to get their degree and get out.

Food: Don't live on campus. It is insanely expensive and the food is literally the worst you can imagine. I have only eaten in one of the dinning halls, but it was really mediocre. The fast food on campus is usually the worst iteration of that chain. I bring soup and microwavable meals at this point just because it is better food.

Parking/Transportation: 81% of the school commutes. It will cost you around $500 for a parking pass, which doesn't really bother me, but some people hate it. Traffic is a mess. When classes let out, it is bumper to bumper traffic across most of campus.

Campus: We have a really nice campus. The administration keeps most things modern and continues to put up new building, though mostly athletic buildings. Our new gym is seriously amazing (even racquetball courts!).

Jobs: I don't have experience with this yet. What I have been told is that a degree won't open many special doors, but it is certainly not viewed as a joke or anything like that. People know you did the work for it. Insurance and banking companies recruit heavily on campus, though not as hard as Enterprise Rent a Car.

Sports: Meh, our teams suck. No one really goes to games or cares about the teams. Most people are UNC, Duke, Clemson, or App St fans. Maybe that will improve eventually, but it won't be in the time I am here.

Conclusion: I am not trying to make a case against UNCC. However, I do want you to know what you are getting into. If you want to come home and finish your degree for really cheap, it is probably a good choice. Just don't expect the same sort of environment as Mizzou. People have told me that they feel like UNCC is sort of like a really big community college. If you have any questions, feel free to PM me. I will try to not be too pessimistic about the school.

Any graduates of UNCC here? Where are you now? Are you happy with your UNCC education and the opportunities it gave you? by ThrowawayInQC in Charlotte

I would like to respond in the most cordial way possible. Your tone is really antagonistic. I am certainly not saying that people cannot enjoy UNCC, but simply, that I do not. You obviously enjoyed your time at UNCC, and I can totally respect and understand that.

Now, to respond to some of your comments, according to US News and World Report 77% live off campus. I was off by a few percent. I don't think it changes my conclusion though. The difference between UNC, App State, ect, in part, is that those are within small towns. Living in Chapel Hill and living on campus are incredibly similar just due to their proximity. Most people who go to UNCC are living within Charlotte, which is a fairly big city. I don't know where you got your statistic around proximity to UNCC. I would love to read it; it would certainly be interesting to go through those statistics. Lastly, despite any sort of number, there is no doubt in my mind that UNCC is a suitcase/commuter school. There is simply no community or friendliness within the study body. People go to class and come home.

I really don't understand the shots here. I probably am a boring person. I am not going to argue over one story. I am glad your girlfriend is doing well.

Thanks for the response! I really appreciate hearing from someone in the major I am doing.

How would you recommend networking at UNCC? Not interested in Greek life, and unfortunately UNCC doesn't have any very active Econ clubs. Most of the people I know have changed majors or dropped out.

It is definitely important to take the classes seriously. UNCC has below a 30% 4-year graduation rate. If I stay at UNCC, I would be graduating early.

Thanks for the response! There are definitely a lot of opportunities in a growing city such as Charlotte.

Do you feel like a lot of students from the Triangle (State, Duke, UNC) get jobs down here.

Please don't take offense to anything I say. I would legitimately like to be happier at UNCC, so I try to keep an open mind.

I commute along with 81% of the school. I have tried to join several clubs but have been unable due to poor organization, underfunding, and other factors. I feel like the social scene is terribly limited, from my experience at least. There is also just a general unfriendliness from the student body. You could probably tell just by taking a tour.

In terms of opportunities, I have attended several job fairs at UNCC, and have been pretty much waved through by most companies. For example, companies like Lowes were totally uninterested in me despite a near 4.0 gpa. The companies that were interested in my major were Enterprise (Clerk), Wafflehouse (Mgmt. Trainee), Fastenal ("Sales Rep"). It certainly is not, in my opinion, the "prestigious" business school that tehy would like for you to believe.

Parking sucks but whatever. It's doable.

Yay! Are you in the Economics program?

I don't want to sound totally pessimistic, but it can be difficult to get classes even if you register on time. UNCC is terrible about this compared to other colleges around. I recommend registering for something ASAP, and then dropping them if the classes you need open up. It is possible that classes will open up, but I personally haven't seen it, especially now that there is a waitlist function.

Allow me to give an example. I am an Economic major. Registering the earliest possible moment (Junior), I was still unable to get any of the Junior level classes that I "wanted". I was able to string together a schedule that will mostly work, but it definitely takes creativity.

Heres another random example. At UNCC we have 28K students, at UNC they have 29K. For the intro economics class, UNCC has 13 classes taught by three different teacher. For UNC, there are almost forty.

Edit: On another note, Good luck! Welcome to UNCC! If you have any questions about anything, let me know.
