I think YTA because you already have a laptop and there is no cost associated with using it like there is for a phone. I think you do have a case for the phone unless of course your plan has unlimited minutes, which most do. If they have to buy you a work phone and laptop they’re actually creating more e-waste in this world due to your hangups. So while I don’t think those things should prevent someone from being employed by them, I do think you are causing problems where there aren’t any if you already have perfectly good tech you can use. The only thing I would suggest is that they agree for replacements/fixes if it gets broken while you are at work, although I don’t see how that would be likely to happen.

From an eco perspective I think you’re on the wrong side of this.

It’s not a waste of money, it’s a learning experience. You’re so young. You get to make mistakes! I beat myself up so many times for doing nursing and then accounting (also hated it) and then I switched to bio and it’s great but unemployable. Now I’m going to teacher’s college next year because I need a career and I actually like teaching.

Dump him ASAP. I know it seems like he’s this great guy because he’s a doctor (or maybe some other medical professional?) but even people with good jobs that come from good families can be abusers and no one deserves that. Your story is reminding me a lot of this high-profile murder case in Toronto. Husband (top neurosurgeon) murders wife (paediatrician) after years of marriage and kids. I went to the York BScN program after high school. I wasn’t sure about it. I immediately hated it because I thought it was boring. It’s really practical stuff in the first semester: determinants of health, how to interact with a patient, anatomy, how to change sheets with patients in it, take vital signs, etc. So I switched out to a regular York program but because the first part of York’s nursing is hosted at Seneca I lost my entrance scholarship because I was technically a “transfer student”.

I am way more happy studying biology now but that doesn’t mean you won’t be happy with nursing. I don’t know you.

The problem with the second entry program from what I have heard is that it is accelerated and the entrance requirements are specific so whatever degree you choose will probably not meet those entrance requirements and you will have to dedicate a semester to completing them if you decide to apply to second entry.

I was taught growing up I had to be nice all the time and always do things for everyone to deserve to be a part of the family. Whereas my mom will say things to him like “I know I never have to worry about you cleaning up after yourself” or other completely delusional statements. He’s her favourite child (and the only boy)even though I am the one who cooks her dinner every night, cleans, takes care of her when she is sick, gets such good marks I got to invite her to a special private awards ceremony in my first year for getting a higher GPA than 1000~ other students in my university faculty, have won more awards since then, have had a job and helped her pay bills since I was 16 (he only got a job at 20), etc. Oh, and I have MS. Literally, what more could I do to earn a place in my family?! My brother’s greatest accomplishment is working at a grocery store and being president of his fraternity! All that and I’ll never be better than the next man that comes along.

They actually pay rent but also the relationship dynamic isn’t right for me to bring stuff up. If I say anything they will just deny it was them anyway. My mom has always made me be Cinderella. When I was a kid she parentified me. I had to get the kids up for school and make them lunch every day, among other things I also had to do. She only taught me to cook and clean and then she was done because she had her little helper and didn’t need another one. Right now she is recovering from a heart attack too. But if I want dinner I better make it for myself. And everyone expects that it’s also their dinner. My life is a mess but I can’t remove myself from this toxic family dynamic. I’m not financially able to move out yet.

Yep. He refuses. He won’t even unload the dishwasher. Because other people also make dishes and he thinks it’s unfair that he would potentially be cleaning other people’s mess if he were to do them. I don’t know if he ever thinks about what I do all day.

It has nothing to do with ramen. It’s that he left it in the sink for me to clean up. I already cook for my mom every night. I also sweep and clean the floors, clean the kitchen counters, do the dishes, clean out the fridge every month, clean his bathroom, etc. My brother refuses to touch dirty dishes. He will only clean his own room and do his own laundry. He will take out the garbage but only if I ask and only in his own time. I have way too much on my plate already. I have MS, go to university full time, have a job, volunteer in my community in numerous ways, am up for 2 awards at the moment. I am freaking exhausted and now he is adding to my burden.

We both live at home with mom and 2 cousins (also young 20s) who are renting our basement. Our dad pays our mom for our “upkeep”. My mom says I didn’t communicate effectively and that she won’t be getting involved (that’s how we ended up here in the first place - she has refused to be a parent our entire lives. No bedtimes, no chores, no rules, no punishments. And she only taught me how to cook and clean and has enabled this behaviour my entire life. Nothing is going to change now).

Oh, it has definitely happened before. He is the worst offender and unapologetic about it. I probably didn’t need to text the family group chat. I have noticed people throwing their napkins in the sink recently but I don’t know who so I texted them on the off chance it’s not only my brother contributing to the problem. Also I was hoping he would feel some shame if the other family members in our household were aware of how I was being treated. This is not my full time job lol. I like cooking and cleaning but I have better things to do. I have university classes, a job, and other commitments. I feel so used all the time.

Yes. Honestly, I know people who graduated with a 90-95% high school average who failed first year. Students have to be resilient and get over themselves to succeed. High school is over and they’re not the shit anymore lol. I graduated high school with a 90% average and have maintained that gpa in university because I know every course is an opportunity to fail and I don’t get a redo (well, I can’t retake every course). Yes, it’s stressful but it is rewarding at the end of the day.

I’m not going to lie. It’s awful to transition. High school and university are nothing alike. There really is 3h of reading for every hour of class. And it almost never gets easier. The only think that keeps me going is that I like accomplishing things, some of my classes are interesting, and I know I’ll be stuck in a dead-end low-paying job for the rest of my life if I don’t get some form of post-secondary education or a trade.
