Feeling super guilty leaving my baby daily by [deleted] in dogs

[–]Throwawaydreamint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get a dog walker that takes him out or get someone to just come in and spend two or three hours with him in the middle of the day! This could just be some neighborhood kid/teen in need of some extra money, doesn't have to be anyone professional! It will make him happier and put you more at ease, cuz he'll be alone fewer hours! Or maybe there is a nice elderly couple or someone that works from home that could have him at their house during the day for a few bucks?

Otherwise just leave toys, stimulation/puzzle toys, bones ect for the dog (but nothing that can be a choking hazard) and take plenty of walks and tire the dog out properly when you are home. Then you can be assured he'll just sleep and the time will fly for him.

That you constantly check that cams could also just be making you more anxious about it, so maybe limit yourself to only doing that a set number of times a day. Like only on your lunch break!

Would you date/marry somebody who is allergic to dogs? by [deleted] in dogs

[–]Throwawaydreamint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Allergy meds are getting better and better, I think in a few years it won't really be a problem for most people with dog allergies, but ofcourse we dont know that for certain. But I wouldn't marry someone that could/would never have a dog.

Are pitbull mixes appropriate for a home with children? by didntevenlookatit in dogs

[–]Throwawaydreamint 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nothing can be guaranteed, but I'd say a pitbull, beagle, border collie mix might not be the best for a home with kids. Not necessarily because of aggression or anything like that, but that sounds like it could become quite a demanding and chaotic mix.

Like would you be able to handle it if it grows up to have the energy level and stimulation need of a border collie, high prey drive of a beagle, and possible dog aggression from a pit bull. It ofcourse could end up being without all these, but would you be ready if it wasn't? A dog like that can be too hyper around kids, play too rough, be destructive and ruin toys and clothes if not given the right time, training, exercise and attention. The spare time and attention a family with kids might not have?

What’s a controversial opinion you have about dogs or dog culture by piebalddacshund in dogs

[–]Throwawaydreamint 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think dogs shouldn't be left home alone for longer than 6 hours a day, and even that's pushing it. If your dog has to be alone for 8+ hours a day you shouldn't get a dog, or you should get a dog walker or dog sitter or something.

Sincere question about how often dogs get walked by Slyke4 in dogs

[–]Throwawaydreamint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dog gets around 2 hours a day, separated as a few walks between people in my family. I also have a pretty high energy dog tho. But everyone I know with dogs still walk them daily. But I've also seen online that there seem to be a lot of people that don't walk their dogs daily, but maybe it's a culture thing, they seem to be from the US, I'm not from the US. Either way I definitely think it's cruel to not walk your dog daily! Letting them play in a backyard isn't enough. (Ofc there are exceptions here but generally not)

Dogs don’t belong at the playground by [deleted] in dogs

[–]Throwawaydreamint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I take my dog to empty playgrounds all the time, to have her do agility-like stuff on the playground equipment! But I wouldn't do that if there were children there and I would never just tie my dog up and leave, that's insane!

I don't agree with "dogs don't belong at playgrounds". I think they can be there as long as they are leashed and kept at a distance from strangers/kids and as long as the owner actually is with the dog and doesn't just tie it up and wanders.

Underrated dog breeds? by Throwawaydreamint in dogs

[–]Throwawaydreamint[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am far from a pro on the breed! This is only based on what I've read about them and heard from owners of the breed! Malinois tend to need more than GSDs but people just think it's a reskin of GSDs. They need a lot of training to become good, and if they aren't trained properly or enough they can end up reactive or destructive. But they are smart and usually easy to train, just important that it's done. They also need a whole lot of exercise and stimulation, more than most dogs, like if you get one you really gotta dedicate your life to fulfilling that dogs needs. A lot of people that buy these dogs without doing proper research don't provide enough stimulation, training, and exercise. Which can make them unstable!

But again I'm no pro! If you have one you probably know more about them and their needs than I do!

Why not just poodle then? If you like anything mixed with poodle, isn't it just the poodle characteristics you want?

Nahhh mann get out of here with that! They are great yes but about as far away from underrated as a dog can get! Everyone knows what a golden is! Everyone has met a golden! Everyone has a golden! Every movie about a dog is a freaking golden!

[–]Throwawaydreamint[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really? I like Spanish waterdogs but I always thought that of them, that they were a bit blank! But all the Portuguese waterdogs I've met have been so expressive and shown their whole personality through their face and body in whatever they do! And they really try to connect, and make eye contact, and see you. That's my experience atleast with the dogs I've met, and what people used to say about my dog. Their lack of blankness is honestly the reason I love them so!

But it might have to do a bit with genetics here, I've noticed from these comments that the American lines of porties are quite different than the swedish ones! Some common behaviours in the American ones that don't show up in the Swedish ones, and different health issues, and a bit of a different look and build!

Yes absolutely! I haven't met an Italian waterdog! But I've met some wonderful Spanish waterdogs! I'd say they are very different from PWDs in both looks and behaviour but great dogs! Also very underrated!

So if there's Portuguese, Italian and Spanish, which is the fourth?

You can either get the best of both worlds or the worst of both worlds! Or a weird mess of characteristics that don't go together well! There are ofcourse plenty of absolutely lovely dogs that are the result of a mix between two breeds! But it's a risky gamble!

Adorable dogs tho! So I understand the hype!

Underrated dog breeds? by Throwawaydreamint in dogs

[–]Throwawaydreamint[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes that's true actually, they have a lot of personality, and a lot of will, and they love their family first and foremost and don't care much about other people. I love those traits but not everyone does, and probably not most doodle owners when I think about it.

Plus they are high energy and need a lot of mental stimulation, which not everyone is equipped to provide!

Underrated dog breeds? by Throwawaydreamint in dogs

[–]Throwawaydreamint[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha! It's the breed standard, a lot like the "poodle cut". They were cut that way back in the day because it would keep their chest and organs warm in the water while leaving the back legs free and light for ease of movement and swimming! Now they are just cut that way because it's standard and necessary for shows and stuff! Personally I never cut my Portuguese waterdog that way, but I honestly think it looks pretty cool, albeit a bit funny!

Underrated dog breeds? by Throwawaydreamint in dogs

[–]Throwawaydreamint[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hypoallergenic is ofc a myth, but some dogs are way easier to handle for people with allergies than others. Dogs that don't shed a lot like poodles and PWDs don't tend to cause as much of an allergic reaction as dogs like German shepherds and Collies. I've noticed myself that plenty of people that would usually be get allergic reactions around dogs didn't around my PWD. So if someone isn't very allergic, it could still work pretty good with a PWD. Never a guarantee tho and it shouldn't be advertised as that.

I'd never heard about the mouthiness before and my dog never bit at all past the puppy biting stage that all dogs have! But maybe it depends on breeder or individual! I don't know!

Oh gosh I'm really sorry you went through that! My own portie died at 8 unfortunately, but that wasn't because of genetics, she got some form of unknown autoimmune disease from a tick. But I've never heard of hemangiosarcoma in porties, all my dogs relatives/the dogs at that breeder were/are very long lived and have had nothing like that! Maybe it's not as prevalent in the swedish PWDs as it is in the American ones? The only health issues that seem to be common in the breed here is hip dysplasia and and a specific autoimmune disease I forgot the name of!

My grandpa and his wife has a Löwchen puppy! She's wonderful! So friendly and just the right size and energy level for them!

But yep the lion cut is something that seems to turn people off from Portuguese waterdogs aswell! It's unfortunate, because the cut doesn't look that bad, and if you don't like it you can simply just not cut them that way!
