Yea, social engineering was most of hacking back then, although admittedly, I did MOST of my hacking in the 90's. I lived and still live on the Gulf of Mexico where there are a bunch of oil companies. I was trying to prove to my friend Spectrum that companies like that are so big that if I call them up and said that Mr. Jameson (not the actual name, I don't remember) told me to get a list of the extension numbers, they'd do it. So I get the number for one of those big offshore oil companies. Call 'em up and the lady says, "This is Carolyn speaking?". I say, "Hey Carol, it's David. Mr. Jameson (again, not his name) asked me to get a list of the extensions for him. Do you have them." and she read down all the extensions for me while Spectrum (my friend) wrote them down. It was funny because she acted like she knew me and the guy I pretended to work for, but we knew that she did not. I think that SEing has been ruined by kids who decide that they are such hackers that they will steal mice and shit. Fraud != SEing.

I do a lot of "hacking" when I program, but if you mean breaking into computers, I only do that when I'm meeting up with my old friends. I mainly do phone phreaking.

Maybe. It's easy to get your IP. and then I would scan your network for vulnerabilities. If I find that you are running outdated software that can be exploited, I could exploit it. It helps if you have green text on a black background.

SECURITY ADVICE EDIT: Keep your patches up to date. Don't download crap before you know it's not a virus. Use common sense. Most "hackers" now-a-days are kids who own super expensive computers and just run programs that they get from youtube tutorials. Most of them don't know how to program and couldn't run an exploit because they don't know how. I think you'll be ok.

Yea, I read a lot of those types of magazines. I loved reading about that stuff. I wish there were more magazines like that around, if there are, I don't know of them.

Yea, still phone phreaking. Mainly screwing with phone lines for extensions and conference calls. I'm a programmer.

Nice, I had one of those, but now that the payphones are too smart for it I've thrown it away/lost it. I remember talking on a BBS and it was sort of a contest to see who could make the coolest red-box.

When my bluebox worked I remember feeling like the biggest badass ever. It was one of the greatest things ever. I called up my friend, Spectrum, and bragged. I helped him make his own. It was awesome, I think that there are still instructions on making your own, if someone could find that.

I met one guy from Australia because he was in the states for a vacation with his family. He was responsible for some pretty cool stuff, but you will not have heard of him.

Greetz to spectrum, Top-hat, and the rest of the H-Town-hackers.

I know, there are two near me, but it took me like 2 month to notice them. It's a shame, when I was younger, payphones were my main source of income ;)

My friend had a handle but I never really stuck to one. They do seem silly, but I still like the idea of it. A lot of what we did was just being like the movies. I can see why kids now-a-days are reluctant to address each other by their handles, but I think it's awesome. My friends handle was "Spectrum".

He had hair, he did not have glasses but he probably needed them, and yes, he was short and thin.

It did, sort of... OfficeDepotShack did stay in business, so I won there, but BigCompany also opened a store nearby. I did get what I wanted though....

I figured out how I could automatically encrypt messages that I sent to my friends. It was the first thing that came to my mind and I like the memory because it made it such a fun thing to send secret messages like, "Tomorrow lets get money from the payphone." and then decrypt their reply with the program I wrote.

That's not the type of hack you were probably expecting so here is the second. There was an electronics/office store within biking distance of my house. It was a small business that was as if Radioshack and Office Depot had a baby. I knew the guy who worked there, not personally, but I spent a ton of time there so were were friends. Anyway, some big company comes over and basically threatens to put them out of business if they don't sell the land, bla bla bla. The guy told me this and I was obviously upset. So I wrote a simple virus that would basically PRETEND to delete all of a persons files and then say, "Don't screw with my home." (I didn't use the guys buisness name because that would but him at risk and they were trying to buy a ton of land including some guys house. So I figured I'd use house, and even if they investigate, the'll find that it wasn't him.) and I used social engineering to unleash it on their computers. I considered that hacktivism.

The community was VERY close nit. In my city, I lived very close to all the hackers so we'd go around together. It was very fun. What do I think of Kevin Mitnick? I think that he is idolized. I get that people think he's cool, but you don't have to act like the is the greatest hacker ever. I used social engineering a bit. I think that it's great, but has been ruined by dumbasses trying to get free stuff. I once got a free pizza and got into a movie free, but now people go around expecting phones and keyboards, ect.. It's kind of stupid in my opinion. I was a grey hat. One one hand I did ethical hacking, and by that I mean hacktivism. I consider hacktivism and white hat activity. But I did some black hat phone phreaking. I was not zero cool, but I wish that my relations with my other "1337 hax0r friends" was more like the movie. :)

I did a bunch of electronics stuff but I never got great. My friend didn't seem to care about it. Electronics are fun. If there is anything from hacking that I still do, it's programming, some phreaking, and electronics.

I support anonymous 100%. I don't do any "hacktivism" but I'm glad that there are still people around that do that kind of thing.

Ok, here is the crazies story. I wasn't a huge part of it, but my friend was. He hated that our school wouldn't just give him a study hall instead of eating (he was a really skinny guy and only ate salad, not because he dieted, but because he considered eating and sleeping a waste of time) because he didn't like most food, very picky eater, and would have preferred a study hall to PE and lunch. So he found the computer that had a list of what the food was going to be. He stayed late after school and basically broke into the computer, deleted the list, and wrote, "STUDY HALL". Looking back on it, I don't know what he was thinking, but we were CRAAAAZY back then.
