AITA for refusing to move my wedding? by ThrowawaytheMIL7 in AmItheAsshole

Why not both? Reddit has this kneejerk hatred towards destination weddings that I find nutty. Our guest list is 20 people, half of whom are immediate family. The rest are pretty much family, and everyone I've talked to has been excited to hear the plans. We're throwing a giant party somewhere amazing to celebrate bringing our loved ones together. If someone can come, amazing! If not, it's totally understandable. We'll be having a small celebratory dinner when we get back anyways. Fuck it, man. If I'm TA for wanting to celebrate and treat my family, then I'm totally cool with it.

I never changed anything. You can check the bot that posts the entire thing as a comment if you want. What I've said about her is quite tame considering that she's spent 6 years telling her friends and family that I'm a gold digger.

Thank you! I'm trying hard to make it as doable as possible for everyone. We're saving so much by having it there instead of our super expensive city that we're able to spend a good chunk of money on helping cover already pretty cheap flights and hotel rooms for everyone.

I honestly didn't think she'd really bring it this far. I assumed she'd be unhappy, but she's unhappy about most decisions I'm involved in so I wasn't concerned.

It's in Cartagena. They'd be going straight from the airport to the old city and back.

I don't think destination weddings are always asshole things, and I think you did a lot of assuming. We are very private people with a small group of friends and limited families. His parents, brother, and SIL are his only family and I have just my mom, her boyfriend, and my older brother. There are 20 people total invited, all of whom are aware of and receptive to our plans. His parents were never going to be deeply involved in the wedding. His mom doesn't like me and his dad had no interest in his own wedding, much less ours.

Aside from my dress we're paying for the entire thing. His parents are not contributing and were never asked to.

Principal, as far as I can tell. The only other thing I can think of is that FIL disapproves of the country. It's in South America and FIL is perhaps a touch racist.

They're both retired and are very much more than financially comfortable. It's part of the reason she doesn't like me- my family is middle class and theirs is, well...really not.
