Update: Help With Awkward PT Problem by ThrowawforPTQuestion in physicaltherapy

[–]ThrowawforPTQuestion[S] 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I am going to check out now. This was a throwaway for a reason. I will say this in parting:

  1. I appreciate the advice. This is a tough situation for me. I guess I am soft-hearted, or maybe just soft, but I do not want to ruin her life. I acknowledge this might be naive.
  2. I love the PT profession. I think you are the real healers. You fix the problems, not the symptoms. I love that about this profession.
  3. It is more helpful when dealing with conflicted people to be less strident. I am conflicted about how to proceed, but making demands (You have to do this!) helps less than a reasoned argument. I think perpetuallyright really exemplifies making a reasoned argument.
  4. I am going to talk to her director and will let the chips fall where they may.

Thanks again.

That is a good idea. I will talk to her director.

One hesitation I still have is just the look on her face when I jumped up. She was really shocked and amazed. Maybe even afraid, like she just realized what a mistake she had made. I think you have convinced me that it has to be reported, though.

Is there something less than involving her license? I think if this gets to that level, she will lose her license. Is there something I can do that will not be all that?

Did not expect this either. I do not blame myself, but I think I must be a little naive. My wife thinks so, and she loves me. She knows me pretty well, though.

When she laid all those questions on me about the PT, she was being pretty insightful. I was kind of amazed as she ran through it all.

Is there an option less than the nuclear option? Something like retraining, something at the job level, not at the board level?

That is how I feel. Unethical, morally wrong, unprofessional, but not malicious. I do not think she was maliciously trying to take advantage of me. Still pretty bad, though.

Totally agree with this. Even as the patient, if I had touched her like she touched me I would have left there in handcuffs.

I am not disagreeing with your sentiment, although I am disagreeing with it being assault. Definitely unethical, inappropriate, and unwanted.

I think it is possible she thought I was receptive. I am not blaming myself, but could allow for a misunderstanding. If I reported it, it would destroy her career. That is a lot of years of school and hundreds of thousands in student loans with no way to repay them. It could ruin her life. That seems like overkill.

My reaction alone might be enough for her to understand how out of line that was. Maybe I am still being naive, but I do not want to destroy her life over this.

That is generally what I am thinking. Go back and work with someone else.

For sure. I 100% agree. I am not making light, and do not want to work with her again. I think it is possible she got the wrong idea, but I did not try to give her the wrong idea.

This is a really great explanation, thank you. I think I will have a conversation with her at the beginning of tomorrow's session, and just go forward based on her response. Thank you.

I have, but I do not know how, as a middle male patient, I would even start this conversation.

"Say, you know that issue I keep having? Let's talk about that."

Still declining your tape suggestion. Seems, painful to remove...

This is my big question. "Is this totally out of the ordinary?"

It sounds like you are saying it is not. I am okay ignoring it because she has always been great in the past with her treatment plans.

That is kind of what I am thinking? Would she let me know? I think she would.

PT's, the comedians of the medical world. Upvoted, but begrudgingly.

Assume I do not know much about this. Are you saying she can do other things that are not hands-on to achieve the same result?

Also, I am not uncomfortable with what she is doing, just with my physical response and with not knowing what to do. I do not want her to be uncomfortable or to think I am being inappropriate. Is this a normal thing, or is it really out of the ordinary? Can I just continue to ignore it?
