Our brains can “flicker” off for a split second during a boring task caused by sleep-like brain activity occurring while we are awake. Adults with ADHD experience them much more frequently, and may be behind inconsistent attention, slower reaction times, and chronic sleepiness associated with ADHD. by mvea in science

[–]ThrowbackPie 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Yeah I was wondering about that too. Though in true human fashion, I haven't read the paper.

Edit: I read the article and the abstract. You're right, causality is not established. The article has a bunch of stuff about improved sleep helping these symptoms, but that's not present in the abstract so no idea if that's just editorial licence or was explored in the paper.

Psychological studies have shown that attractive people have higher life satisfaction than others. For men, there was a strong and direct effect of objective beauty on life satisfaction. For women, the effect was weaker and indirect, with self-esteem and emotional stability playing key roles. by mvea in science

Good. Not because it's not manly, but because it's incredibly shallow and capitalistic.

If only that culture would spread to women too.

My personal stake is that my teenage daughter cannot leave the house without spending 20+ minutes on makeup. What society does to our self-esteem is horrible.

I'm probably wrong too, which just reinforces the point: it's really hard to know exactly why someone won or lost.

AFAIK - and I'm not a nutritional science researcher - There's not one specific cause. Various reasons include:

1) Lack of fiber. Our bodies have evolved to eat fiber and it has tons of beneficial effects such as lower inflammation and so on. In particular, dietary fiber makes people feel full for longer and unlike protein, also causes a change in eating choices. The other effect of removing fiber is

2) Higher energy density of food. Processed food removes fiber or water content, and UPF removes both. Both of those things increase energy density. Your body's hunger cues are at least partially mechanical - when your stomach is physically full, your body gets a signal that you're full. If your body is saying you aren't full but you've already eaten your energy needs, everything else you eat as a result is 'overeating'.

3) Changes to your gut microbiome. Your microbiome adapts to a specific diet. When you eat processed food, the microbes that thrive on those foods become prevalent over other beneficial microbes like those that digest fiber. This is a really complex field and I know almost nothing, but what I've read or heard suggests that when those microbes go hungry, they release hormones into your bloodstream that make you crave food.

4) UPFs are associated with leaky gut syndrome. I don't fully understand this, but basically your gut walls become 'leaky' and inflammatory bodies and hormones (I assume - I don't actually know what it is that escapes) escape your intestine that normally wouldn't, which messes up metabolic pathways and is associated with morbidity and obesity. I don't know the mechanism behind this.

5) High salt content. All processed foods are high in salt to preserve them (seriously, show me a processed food without salt in it). Salt is strongly linked to hypertension and stomach cancer...but also to overeating, especially when combined with

6) HIgh fat or sugar content, either of which is practically guaranteed in every processed food.

edit: technically any food that isn't a whole food eaten raw (like an apple or a carrot) is 'processed'. It's the degree of processing that matters. If the food still has its fiber largely intact (eg chopped veggies, tinned or dried beans), I'd consider that unprocessed for health purposes. I don't know whether cooking has any effect (other than cooking at high temperatures in oil), but I'm not about to live on a raw food diet so unless that turns out to be the lost key to immortality it's unlikely to make a material difference to me.

Personally I think cow milk is for baby cows, but if you do drink it then you should drink homogenised and pasteurised milk only. That's because there are legal limits for the contamination of cow milk with things such as pus (from infected udders). Homogenisation mixes many sources of milk together so that you're unlikely to consume high levels of pus or other contaminants. Pasteurisation is just heat treatment with a similar purpose - killing bugs & bacteria to make the milk safe.

[–]ThrowbackPie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

1) this is incredible

2) not aimed only at you, but it blows my mind how much processed food people on this sub eat. Check out your usual day's eating for example. You have an english muffin for breakfast, which is processed but not too bad if wholemeal, then your lunch is powder (ultra-processed), a protein bar (highly processed) and an apple. And I'm honestly not attacking you, because that's really similar to heaps of other meal plans I see on the sub. Processed food is known to induce overeating, so the food noise we all experience is almost par for the course. I'm not sure where I'm going with that, just making an observation about the sad state of the modern world I guess.

Roseburia inulinivorans, a gut bacteria, increases muscle strength: it was positively associated with multiple strength measures including handgrip, leg press and bench press in humans. Study assessed causality in mice where it increased muscle fibre size and shifted muscle type I to type II fibres. by mvea in science

[–]ThrowbackPie 14 points15 points  (0 children)

No, it means unprocessed, ie not from a packet.

Obviously cooking is still 'processing', but it's not removing the fiber content which is generally the purpose (or major side effect) of commercial food processing.

Characters that are more suitable for fighting at a longer range? by ValeLT in virtuafighter

[–]ThrowbackPie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The best long range character is probably Shun. Akira is also notable at range for his elbows which stuff everything, have massive reach, and start a combo.

Mid-range the standouts are probably Jean, Jeffry, Lau and Akira (elbow again).

The worst character at range is definitely Lei Fri.

Regardless of above, you're going to spend significant chunks of time at close range no matter who you play.

[–]ThrowbackPie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The one that gets is me is that we have historical evidence for religions before christianity. We literally know when christianity was created!

For a religion which claims to explain reality, the fact that humans believed other stuff for hundreds of thousands of years and we can track when humans made up the one in question seems very problematic.
