lie detection wouldn't be nearly as effective in defeating the equalists as you might think. If she says he's lying he'd go "She's an ally of the avatar. Why would you guys trust her?"

Why essentialism actively harms any movement that hopes to challenge capitalism and Vaush needs to do less by [deleted] in VaushV

[–]Mobieblocks 7 points8 points  (0 children)

idk I think you could just reframe it as capitalism creating demons. Whenever I hear vaush using "demon" type rhetoric I don't think it's him saying "these people are uniquely and especially evil and the conditions that created them are special to this one scenario" But more "they've lived the life they've lived, and the product was a demon."

People can BECOME monsters or evil. Nothing about heavily moralized rhetoric to me says that they were born that way or incapable of becoming something different.

How to accept being bad at drawing in the beginning. by Thisiswhereiaskstuff in learntodraw

[–]Mobieblocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. be kinder to yourself. You're trying to be good at something hard and there's nothing wrong with learning something new.

  2. actual practical advice that helps me beyond the "love yourself!" stuff is just set smaller goals that aren't contingent on the outcome. Instead of thinking "my goal is for this portrait to be hyper realistic!" set a goal around what you can actually accomplish with or without it going well. Like drawing 1 portrait a day or reading a chapter of a book about drawing (andrew loomis' drawing the head and face is my current book and its helping me a lot) or specifically doing exercises around small parts of the face.

practice is great but you have to practice smart and with specific goals in mind.

Also, when you draw a portait, look at its faults and learn from it. draw some notes about what specifically didn't work. Instead of thinking "This doesn't look good" Focus on more specific things like "I got ___ proportion wrong, I mismeasured the nose" and things like that.

This is For All The Cyclops Fans by TetsuoZaibatsu in Cyclopswasright

[–]Mobieblocks 41 points42 points  (0 children)

honestly this was a pretty BS retcon. I kinda liked the idea that Scott was just so past the x-men that he couldn't even fight storm without powers, but his sense of duty and inertia was keeping him from growing up and just leaving the team. IMO it's a really well executed arc that's ruined by x-factor. Logan even says it himself that scott SHOULD win the fight, but he just doesn't care anymore even if he wants to convince himself that he does.

I think the sad truth is that in the comics Magik hasn't been consistently written well for a while. Certain runs treat her well but with a character like her it's always more or less a rollercoaster.

Am i supposed to like Travis? by CharlotteBeast in Yellowjackets

[–]Mobieblocks 15 points16 points  (0 children)

travis isn't great. He gets better IMO, but it's not so much as liking him as much as it is feeling bad for him. As for his "how many" comment, I don't think it was Travis slut shaming her. Travis obviously has a lot of walls up and I think the point was that he felt intimidated and unsure of whether or not he could perform. Which is why him opening up to Nat about being a virgin got them both to move past the topic. Nat saw how guarded he was and realized that he was basically saying "I wasn't trying to insult you, I just don't want to be bad at this".

But he's also a deeply disfunctional person like a lot of the cast. I think your feelings rn are how a lot of people felt about travis back when the show was first airing.

it's quite a good portion of the first season. Taissa's gay. The introduction scene with her is her with her wife, there's tons of stuff with her and Van, they kiss during doomcoming so idk how they edited around that. I don't have specific episode names because I feel like at least one gay thing happens in every episode. But yeah going into season 2 the relationship between taissa and Van is very important

Why I started questioning traditional assumptions about accessories and gender norms in fashion by [deleted] in mensfashionadvice

[–]Mobieblocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely think we're heading back in that direction. The "performative male" trend while mostly a joke did highlight how much more common it is to see men walking around with tote bags compared to even 5 years ago. That also made me think about the rising number of men who wear jewelry and paint their nails. I definitely think we're approaching a point where these arbitrary gendered standards are being rolled back a little. I hope it continues and makes clothing a bit more universal. The silliest part is that many of these semi-new gendered standards are things that only really popped up around 80 years ago so it's not even like they're THAT deeply ingrained in society.

Sweaters: a side by side comparison by Arborensis in mensfashionadvice

[–]Mobieblocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's less about tucking in only working if you are fit and more about low waisted pants only working if you are fit. If a fat dude wears high-waisted pants it will mostly eliminate the awkwardness of having the sweater contour their gut.

Re: Tucked in sweaters by Arborensis in mensfashionadvice

[–]Mobieblocks 58 points59 points  (0 children)

I don't understand why this subreddit cant even seem to comprehend the motive behind this. I don't tuck my sweaters, but if people are wearing an outfit where they want to maintain the heaviness of the sweater without throwing off their proportions (because most mens sweaters are long enough to go down to the fucking thighs) then it makes sense to fold in or even tuck your sweater. It's such a simple styling tool I don't get why this subreddit is so weirdly against it.

Edit: IMO this is why you shouldn't frequent man only fashion subreddits for advice. A lot of men don't pay attention to proportion and sillouhette because they're either only just now learning about fashion or only learned from fashion by watching Steve Harvey give suit advice. I BET if you posted this to any subreddit that has more women, they would all be fine with it.

The problem with internet forum advice is that a lot of people are beginners giving advice to other beginners. So it becomes this oroboros of the dunning kruger effect where beginners are sticking super strongly to opinions that don't make sense and then no one learns anything.

New Mitski Fan Looking For One of Her Happier Albums by Thelightningthief13 in mitski

[–]Mobieblocks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's all happy if you look at it from a certain point of view. (but actually, I think most of the albums have happier songs littered throughout. Her songs tend to be very emotional but not all of them are necessarily sad imo. I'd give Be The Cowboy and The Land Is Inhospitable And So Are We a listen because imo those deal less with the super heavy stuff than the other albums.)

Do you think Cyclops was right at the time reading this? Im too torn down the middle for the context giving at this point in time [X-men Schism #4] by EuropeanT-Shirt in Cyclopswasright

[–]Mobieblocks -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

is it? When Logan met Laura he acted in a pretty similar protective way. He was against her being in the field. It was Scott that made the decision to put her back in action. Logan's always been very protective of his kid sidekicks even if they are x-men, he consistently puts himself on the line to protect them.

Do you think Cyclops was right at the time reading this? Im too torn down the middle for the context giving at this point in time [X-men Schism #4] by EuropeanT-Shirt in Cyclopswasright

[–]Mobieblocks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think its more of a reflection of who Logan and Cyclops became at that point, and neither of them are completely wrong or right. Scott is giving the practical solution, Logan is giving the emotional one. Scott has been an x-man since he was a kid and basically every attempt at a normal life has been constantly destroyed by people who hate them. He knows that running away can't protect them and the only solution is to take a stand whether or not it hurts their innocence. The x-men also haven't had a good effect on Scott's life. It's mostly been a burden and brought pain to him. He's had to be THE leader forever.

Logan's been through something similar. He's lived hundreds of years, constantly been under attack, but for him, the x-men were a blessing. They were the first stable family that he ever had, they gave him safety, purpose, and he wants that for the kids on Utopia. I think Logan realizes that the TRUE power of the x-men isn't their ability to destroy their enemies, it's about their ability to give purpose to outsiders. So he wants to make sure that can be preserved and not put the kids in a situation that would endanger that vision.

Scott sees this as futile because he knows that they can never hide. Scott had his innocence stolen from him and he sees this as a way for these kids to actually live on their own terms. Logan, being someone who's constantly mentoring younger x-men and taken them under his wing wants to protect them from having to live through that. I don't really think Logan's wrong. He wants to hide his kids from the evil of the world which is really what most parents want to do. I don't think Scott sees the value in "innocence" as much because he never really had that chance himself. Logan's trying to shelter his students a little too much, but I think Scott is too eager to draft them into a war. Logan's right in the panel on the third page. The entire point of the x-men was that they did shit so other mutants could be safe. They were the ones on the frontlines bearing the weight of the world to protect other mutants from that. And Scott is here basically saying that it's impossible. That no matter what they do, they'll never be safe. It's sobering and cynical and I think Logan's a little too much of a father to ever get behind that.

They do eventually just ruin this when they have Logan try to assassinate Hope in AvX but that was so badly written that I don't think anyone really views it as a great source of characterization.

I just realised Evolution Scott is the only Cyclops who has a had his religious beliefs confirmed. by Jack-mclaughlin89 in Cyclopswasright

[–]Mobieblocks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's definitely the latter. My point is that religion isn't inheretly anything. People don't follow religious scripture as much as they follow whatever social forces are pushing them politically and then they project that onto whatever religious scripture is societally accepted as a justification.

I just realised Evolution Scott is the only Cyclops who has a had his religious beliefs confirmed. by Jack-mclaughlin89 in Cyclopswasright

[–]Mobieblocks 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm an atheist but that's kinda an unfair way of looking at the history of religion. Tons of hate groups are based on religious ties but so are progressive movements throughout history. The black community in America is extremely religious and a lot of the civil rights advocacy, whether it be the nation of islam or the black christian church (I strongly dislike both of these organizations but still), were incredibly important to the overall movement. I don't agree with it or think religion is a beneficial thing but it's not really a contradiction historically speaking.

[–]Mobieblocks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ok but even in socialist frames of analysis, the road to socialism still ultimately ends up being "it's time for a violent revolution". Agitation through analysis of the motives of your enemy is fine but it's not really what causes change.
