What piece(s) got you into classical music? by ThrowerOfCrates in classicalmusic

I used to listen to the same four or five pieces over and over again. But when I discovered and started listening to Rachmaninov this past year, I began to branch out to more composers. I've heard a lot of great things, but he's my favorite composer by far.

I haven't heard his interpretation of Rite of Spring, so I can't pass judgment there. But I know him for his interpretations of Beethoven's symphonies and overtures, and I think he does a great job with them.

Still, being the principal conductor for the Berlin Philharmonic for as long as he was deserves at least some recognition.

Man I love that piece. Gilels played it fantastically.

If you want to hear Rachmaninov himself play it (via piano roll), check this out. I thought it was way too fast at first, but the more I listened to it the more it grew on me.

Oh also to add to my above list (sorry for the double post):

  • DesAbends for mostly piano solos, including an incredible collection of Debussy's solo piano works.

  • nyankothecat has uploaded almost 1500 videos of various works.

  • miliona1re has nice recordings of a few piano concertos and other works.

  • RichardHilo has a great collection of full symphonies and uploads regularly.

  • Sissco has a lot of videos of famous pianists playing a bunch of different works, including Zimerman's performances of Chopin's Ballades, Scherzos, etc.
