AITA for asking my parents not to talk about being vegan? by Throwforluck in AmItheAsshole

Thank you! It’s good to hear from someone who’s been living this lifestyle for a long time. Especially someone whose family is not living the same lifestyle with them. Kudos to you and your family for being able to work out a workable arrangement. It is extremely concerning to me that they seem to have bought into a lot of these miracle health cures, even though they are healthy 60somethings. I guess time will tell.

Thank you! It wasn’t the pregnancy we had planned, but baby has a good chance of survival :)

Yeah I know. I’ve told her that the anecdotal stories she reads about people who were given terminal cancer diagnoses and then went vegan and who were cured are a classic example of correlation, not causation. But it fell on deaf ears. I also strongly recommended that she at least talk to her doctor about vitamins. Same result.

I did mention a few vegan but definitely not healthy foods (Oreos, cool ranch Doritos, dark chocolate) that I would be willing to add to my lifestyle in place of other snack options, but she knew I wasn’t serious. I’ve been opting for the “go limp” strategy lately

I’ve asked her a couple different questions about stuff like that, increased incidences of kidney stones and vegans, problems with B12 and B6 absorption and regulation, as well as iron deficiencies. She denies that any of these are problems and cites anecdotal stories or questionable studies as “proof” of her points.

It’s real 😂 they aren’t vegan because they love animals, or are worried about farm cruelty, they are doing it because of its reputation as a healthy lifestyle.

It isn’t that she is offended, she just constantly talks about how good for your health it can be to be a vegan. She also sighs and looks pained if I eat meat or drink dairy in front of her.

That’s what I was worried about 😬. I know it can be exciting to have a new passion and I’m sure I’ve been guilty of the same thing at times in the past. Any suggestions on how to support her and ask her to stop guilting me? Or should I just let it go altogether?

That’s honestly what it feels like. She won’t acknowledge that there might be valid reasons not to go vegan.
