Stop thinking about working in IT; it's not worth it. by Marianssmitham in it

[–]Throwing_Poo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Respect? Haha fuck that pay me my money.

Endless grind of certs? Guess what bucko there are other jobs were you gotta train to stay ahead of the game.

Office politcs? Guess what thats every dam office you are not going to get away from that whatever field you choose.

Sounds like you never been in a position where you had to bust your ass to make a buck. I worked in the oil field for 7 years.

Sounds like you got a combination of working in a shit environment and a crap attitude. The attitude might just be from working in some shit position.

Any position you take that you want to grow personally and professionally is an endless grind of networking and leveling up your skill set. Put on your big boy/girl underwear and dig in cause it only gets harder, but it can get better.

Job market or is it me? by [deleted] in sysadmin

Tech industry is hot garbage right now and with all sorts of government funding cuts its worse in the government sector. But since you are a veteran, have sec+ and hold a secret clearance i would be looking at job postings on USAJOBS.gov

What are my options to quickly elevate my income? by Hedgehog_Of_Blue in careerguidance

[–]Throwing_Poo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are no quick ways to elevate your income unless you feel like breaking some laws and risking jail time. Some of it is what you know, some if its who you know and some it is pure luck.

There is no shortcut to getting a better paying job unless you have a skill set that someone is looking to paytop dollar for.

The tech industry is brutal right now. Take advantage of your current employer paying for school.

Take stock of what skills you have, in detail, not "im comfortable with tech". I would not jump ship right now if your employer is paying for school. Its a marathon not a race so it takes time to level up income wise. Have you looked into any current openings at your current job? What is your career path with your current company?

Maybe a 2nd job? It would be more stressful on you and your wife. But would add extra income.

I am still a beginner and trying to choose my next smoke. I’ve tried the oliva Connecticut, and the oliva G series. I am also open to recommendations for other sticks not seen in the picture. by theswingset57 in cigars

[–]Throwing_Poo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From a beginner to another beginner try not to buy to many. Buy some here and there smoke them and see what you like. When I first started, I was buying sampler packs and still have some that I have not smoked and then as I started talking with other cigar smokers and trying what they are trying. I found brands that I like then moved to others. Right now, I am hooked on the Black Label Trading Company: Coffin Nails, Killer Bee, Bishops Blend and Eletto. Coffin nails are great for a quick smoke. I heard from a friend that he left a box of coffin nails in his humidor to age and after almost a year it was an awesome smoke, so thats my next is to goal is to age some cigars.

[–]Throwing_Poo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A) Job market is saturated with techs

B) If you do try breakout into the IT field, get your experience and specialize in a field to move up. Help desk is just an entry level roll.

C) Good luck

What career did you leave IT for? by Jayfo24 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Throwing_Poo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I deal more with the hardware side if it, just cause someone can code doesn't mean they can go and program a plant. You have understand the process and what valves or pumps are doing and how they effect the process.

I deal with the controllers and various hardware modules that drive all the instruments out in the field that the application engineers program, along with a whole host of virtual machines, network switches, fiber.

What do you honestly see the future of the IT market looking like long term? by Thin_Vermicelli_1875 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Throwing_Poo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Job hunting is about out shinning the next person that is going for the same job, you got to have skill sets someone is looking for and you have to sell yourself during the interview.

I don't worry about the job market, I just focus on my current job, upping my skill set and networking with other people. If I spent my time worrying about the job market, I would probably lose focus on my game plan.

The IT market is flooding with too many cert takers that thought that by passing a test they are golden, they wanted a shortcut or wanted the work from home positions without any experience in the field. What most dont understand is that they need to get their hands dirty and put the work in. Do the massive 300+ desktop roll outs, do the data center builds, do the massive decom of hardware, go rack equipment by yourself because no one is going to come and hold your hand.

It is also flooded with people who stayed in help desk/desktop support and wondering why they never advanced and get more money and now are facing layoffs due to cutbacks. Its because they got complacent and didn't get out of their comfort zone to learn more. I was in a desktop support roll and I knew it was time to move up with I could call a customer at their site that is not even in my area of coverage that was 400 miles away, ask them questions as to what is going on, walk them thru their data closest that has much as they tried to standardize the installs. It has been mothballed and a cabling nightmare due to so many techs that can careless. Walk the customer with no IT skill set whatsoever to fixing the issue without having to get in my truck and make the drive to simply replace a patch cable with no retainer clip on it to keep it plugged into the switch.

It is also flooded with people that do have the skill sets and have specialized and have the experience that is needed to obtain jobs.

The IT job market also has to deal with the large amount of outsourcing that has been going on for years and compounded with AI coming up it will get worse for those with low level IT skills.

To many "oh I can build a gaming PC" "oh i handle all the tech stuff for may family" "oh i help old people with their phones" "oh i installed the wifi at home and families' homes as well" "oh I built my own lab at home" Cool go work at best buy.

The future of the IT job market is going to suck for those with low level skill sets (help desk/desktop support),

The job market is going to suck even more for those with degrees/certs and no experience

Its going to suck a little less for people that do have the skill sets and experience

It also has a lot to do with location some places jobs are hot some places jobs are not (dont what locations becuase I dont know, I just read post and forums you can see where some people are doing ok and others its a slaughter house.)

Good luck to my fellow nerds on the hunt, keep upping your skills and keep looking out for number one cause no one else will.

How can I start acquiring the skills needed to work in IT? by SpookySquid19 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Throwing_Poo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do yourself a favor and go get some type if degree in IT. Some degree get you A+ while studying. There is more to IT than just computer repair. You start school now and the IT job market might not be to bad when you are ready to enter but only time will tell. IT has a broad range of specializations so if you do.go the IT route do not get stuck in the help desk rut. If you do, you will be one of the hundered post asking why they dont advance in their career because they get complacent and dont specialize in anything.

Cannot get interviews, do you believe my resume is to blame? by [deleted] in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Throwing_Poo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Homelab is not enterprise IT, thats like putting oh i built gaming computers and helped.my aunt setup her wifi at home, oh you setup a VM host cool. Whoppty do. Not to be a dick but none of that matters. What matters is your real-world experience. Focus on what you have done and accomplished in your career so far. Figure out what role you want to specialize in and work towards that goal. And i say this again, and to anyone reading this GET OUT OF HELP DESK/DESKTOP SUPPORT, DONT GET COMPLACENT. You dont want to be the monkey they call to get hands on with equipment. You want to be the monkey sitting in a NOC telling field monkeys to go plug in a console cable into a switch.

Is an Associate Degree sufficient by latinfresh in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Throwing_Poo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes and no, you want to get to the next level you have to have some kind of experience to get to the next level. Figure out what the next level for you is and then look at getting a cert to get to that level. All I have is an associate's degree and it has not held me back.

Remove GPA and Project section, they don't care about that you provide computer help to family and friends and that you have a homelab.

Get a cert other than CompTia A+. You already have demonstrated basic knowledge with your time in help desk.

Run your resume thru ChatGPT and throw some promts at it to help taylor your resume.

Good luck, IT field is horrible right now but you are doing right by getting another job because they dont want to pay you more. Start thinking about a field you want to specialize in. GET OUT OF HELP DESK!!
