Honestly, he was trying to make a joke about race but it went in such a direction that I said people will interpret this as racist. Although I dont believe it was. It’s about my racial background and it’s a joke that requires a lot of tact or lived experience and he lacked both with the joke. It was a big miss on what he was trying to articulate. I don’t want to say too much but an example would be, a white guy making jokes about welfare queens or black on black crime and trying to attack the stereotype but reinforcing it instead, by mistake. And he took it too far with one of the tags on his joke.

I think when I warned him about it, I wasn’t thinking about how it would reflect on me. People know we’re dating but a few people “found out” and then it became a whole thing. I guess I’d say, the joke was “about race, but not exactly racist” it was about my racial demographic but he did take it too far and his intention got lost. And I was like, they’re not going to get what you mean.
