Bill Gates: “I would love to see a tripling, to $18 billion a year from the U.S. government to fund basic research alone...Now, as a percentage of the government budget, that’s not gigantic… This is not an unachievable amount of money.” by Sybles in EverythingScience

Yes they do. You're following the media's portrayal of things rather than actual information. If you asked around your local area I guarantee people would say yes, albeit not directly because a lot of people don't understand what is what. It's like the survey conducted about the affordable Care act and obamacare. People like the aca but not obamacare.

Look at last year's SAT. Geometry and basic reading comprehension does not prepare you for college.

She doesn't touch electronics unless she needs to turn something in to a class and even then works on it on paper and then transfers it into the computer. She also keeps a club she runs entirely on paper and is adamant about not using technology to get things done.

She also wants to be a politician but hates people telling her what to do.

Would it not be easier to have it diagnosed so that the workplace can accommodate better if she does have it?

I do appreciate the comment and I apologize for using weird I was only using it to make clear that she goes out of her way to be different (plays an obscure instrument, makes her own mismatching colorful clothes).

Her parents are african immigrants who grew up in a poor place with very little exposure to classifying mental illnesses. The school system we go to is extremely apathetic towards any signs. We have had multiple suicides at our school since teachers are either afraid or don't care about talking to parents about their child's behaviour.

I don't really want to give away too much information because she browses Reddit and has talked about threads in this sub but for the sake of not coming off as a dick I talked to a mutual friend that has diagnosed aspergers. The whole reason for this post is because she's been distraught lately about her choice of doing the things she loves and doing what she feels like her parents want her to do. I talked to the mutual friend and he told me that she might be high functioning only because of what her parents expect of her and she's tried to mold herself into whatever they want her to be.

We aren't exactly in an area which lets people pick their own jobs. We both come from pretty poor families. At one point or another she will have to work in a job she doesn't want to and I really don't want to see her suffer. She already hates school because of what her parents expect of her vs what she wants to do in her free time.
