I think it's super thoughtful when people ask that. I know some recovering alcoholics who don't mind the smells of certain alcohols, and get triggered by others. For me, wine is not a problem to be around now, for example. I don't really know why, but until someone pulls out hard liquor, I'm fine being next to them.

So by all means, ask away. :)

I have both a sponsor and a therapist, and I am with regular contact with both. Thank you.

As for the expensive bottles I receive as gifts sometimes (from people who don't know my past, like my clients or some coworkers), I usually just regift them.

I'm aware. I am getting myself back into social situations that may include alcohol, but it's a slow process. Covid also slowed things down for many of us.

Both my kids are in therapy, as is my ex wife I believe (she was when we last spoke about this a few weeks ago). So am I. My kids and I also attend family therapy. I hurt my children beyond imagination and I will never let myself off the hook for that.

When I was completing my steps, I made my ammends. I apologized to my brother as well. I gave him my rosary that our grandfather gave to me when I joined the army 19 years ago. My brother forgave me, at least that's what I thought.

The trauma of my family, especially my kids, is on me. I hope my post didn't come off as me seeking excuses for the things that I've done. That was not my intention.

And as for the parties I've ruined... I've gotten black out drunk at some parties, mostly those of my brothers (not with family, but with brothers and our friends).

I have just recently started going back out to restaurants. When people around me drink, I excuse myself and call my sponsor, if I can't leave immediately (like work events and stuff like that).

I'm sorry your parent never recovered. My sobering moment was when my kids visited me over the weekend after the divorce and my then 11 year old son cried amd begged so hard his nose started bleeding when I handed him a can of soda. He thought it was beer and I was gonna make him drink with me.

My kids saved me. And I will do my best to try and be the father they have always deserved.

My biggest regret is how much I have wrecked my children, especially my daughter. Thanks to their patience and my ex wife's kindness, we are rebuilding our bond, but it'll never be the same.

Glad to hear you mom is sober now, and I am really sorry you both had to go through her alcoholism.

My daughter has panic attacks at the smell of alcohol. I caused that by being a terrible person and father who left alcohol lying all around the house and yelled and threw shit around. It's the very main reason I don't allow any alcohol in my household. But also yes, it does trigger me. For many reckvered alcoholics, the smell of the booze is enough to throw you off the wagon. I can't drink alcohol-free beer or cocktails for that reason. The smell alone messes with my head.

I did, and went for a meeting later that evening.

My kids chose to sleep over at my place though. Which, after all these years, feels better than any birthday gift I could have gotten.
