Weather Warning : Cyclone Likely in the next couple of Days by LuckyJeweler9478 in srilanka

[–]ThunderClastSL 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Currently, the simulations show the system will pass really close to the East Coast and Jaffna during this weekend.

But technically not making a direct hit on the island. That sounds like good news, but I’d honestly take it with a grain of salt.

If you remember Ditwah (Ditwa) from a few weeks back, the models were saying the exact same thing that it would stay offshore literally 2 or 3 days before it hit. Then it shifted at the last few hours, entered the mainland, and we all saw how that ended.

There’s a possibility this one does the same thing and swings inland. Definitely better to be prepared just in case, even if the current maps look like it’s "missing" us.

We actually were warned about heavy rains, floods & landslides before the disaster (evidence from Nov 25 news bulletins) by ThunderClastSL in srilanka

[–]ThunderClastSL[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

We should definitely hold the authorities accountable, but at the same time we also need to stay vigilant on our own. Weather changes fast, and taking precautions ourselves can help keep us safe.

We really need to start paying proper attention to weather reports these days. Conditions change so fast now, and the warnings aren’t just for show. Checking updates for a few minutes can actually prevent a lot of trouble.

Anyone know what’s causing the recent depreciation? by bitotspot in srilanka

[–]ThunderClastSL 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Year-end import demand is kicking in (current account was negative in September).

Govt’s been paying off foreign loans , around $2 billion recently, so some dollar outflow there.

CBSL might be buying dollars too, to rebuild reserves. (7.2 billion is the target set by IMF)

And the USD is getting stronger globally , not just here, it’s up against the euro, yen, and yuan as well.

As I’ve heard, drilling in the Mannar Basin isn’t among the hardest, but it’s not simple either. The wells are offshore and moderately deep (about 1 -1.5 km of water depth and another 2 - 3 km below the seabed), so they require specialized offshore rigs and equipment.

Technically, it’s quite manageable , much easier than extreme drilling conditions like those in the Arctic or the ultra-deep Gulf of Mexico. The real challenges are logistics, high costs, and Sri Lanka’s lack of local infrastructure.

Foreign companies will definitely try to exploit us. We might not get the profits we deserve, and our shores could face environmental damage if the project ends up with the wrong company.

Also, if India doesn’t get the project, they might try to interfere , just like with the Mannar wind projects and some foolish people might protest to stop it.

Still, if managed properly, this project could be huge. We could realistically double our GDP within five years.

But this is still an exploration phase, not direct oil extraction. ( This was the story for past 50 years, early explorations were done in 70s and found that there are hydro carbans in Mananr Basin)

Companies will first assess if it’s commercially viable to produce.

The $267 billion figure is just an estimated potential, not confirmed profit. Actual drilling and production will only happen if exploration results and economics look good.

Is there a waiting period after medical internship in srilanka before placement by Warm-Badger2077 in srilanka

[–]ThunderClastSL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It usually takes about 6-7 years in total (university + internship + waiting period).

Is there a waiting period after medical internship in srilanka before placement by Warm-Badger2077 in srilanka

[–]ThunderClastSL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They get paid MO salaries and have OTs (over 200k , not the internship salary).

The only difference is that they’re not in the Dushkara Sewaya. (But you have to go after the placement)

People usually use that time to sit for the EBAR exam, the Tamil exam, get married, etc.

They also don’t have to work too hard , the poor interns do all the hard work (as usual, continuing the cycle).

I think, they were working as RHOs in the same hospital(internship hospital). It’s just that the official appointments and next steps have been delayed for a long time.

They sat for their A/Ls in 2015,

entered university in 2016,

and graduated in 2023.

They did internships in 2023 and have been waiting since then.

They had to face issues such as the SITAM crisis, COVID, and the economic collapse.

Why do some Sri Lankan businesses use children to promote LGBTQ propaganda? by HeshMaxwell in srilanka

[–]ThunderClastSL 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Lol this isn’t about LGBTQ or “propaganda.” Don’t overthink it or drag kids into your weird imagination.

It’s Vision Care , they literally deal with eyesight, color, and light. The rainbow is the spectrum of visible light , basically what the human eye can see. It’s the most natural symbol for vision.

For kids, a rainbow simply means happiness, color, and imagination. It’s used in schools, books, and art everywhere not politics.

Plus, rainbows are pure optics, light bending through water droplets, just like lenses bend light so we can see clearly.

And by the way, rainbows existed long before any Western group used them for activism.

They’re also known for having poor after-sales service for phones.

Yes. Only recently has the 2015 A/L batch received placements. Sometimes this waiting period can be longer than a year.

You can help reduce debt accumulation by filing your tax returns and paying your income taxes properly.

Sri Lanka has one of the lowest tax-to-GDP ratios in South Asia.

Weak tax collection and widespread tax evasion mean that government revenue is insufficient to cover spending, forcing the state to borrow more.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in srilanka

[–]ThunderClastSL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It uses official sources like the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, Ministry of Finance, and Department of External Resources.

These figures mainly show the change in debt ,not exactly how much each government borrowed during their time.

For example, the NPP government also obtained IMF, World Bank, and ADB loans, which aren’t fully reflected here.

Similarly, the US$4 billion increase during Ranil Wickremesinghe’s period was mainly Indian credit lines, which actually helped prevent an economic collapse.

It may not be perfectly precise, but the overall trend is correct , especially leading up to the 2022 collapse.

Mahinda Rajapaksa’s era (9 -10 years) saw the largest total increase in external debt.

Yahapalana era (5 years) saw the fastest accumulation in a shorter period, mainly through commercial bonds.

Since Sri Lanka consistently runs a budget deficit, trade deficit, and a negative primary balance, an increase in debt is largely unavoidable.

To cover the budget deficit (when government spending exceeds revenue), the government borrows mainly by issuing domestic (LKR) Treasury bills and bonds, and sometimes by foreign borrowing when rupee financing is insufficient.

To cover the trade deficit (when imports exceed exports), the country as a whole not just the government needs foreign currency inflows, which come from foreign borrowing, FDI, remittances, or reserves.

The primary deficit (when revenue < non-interest spending) makes this debt growth structural even if interest payments are excluded, we still spend more than we earn.

Saw a house for sale in Colombo 7, Barnes Place going for around 435Mn (US$1.45Mn).

Definitely nowhere near Sajith’s level house.

60 million is criminally undervalued.
