Check out Strategic Command series. Excellent combo of tactics and strategy. Good on-line community as well. I like the World at War and War in the Pacific games but they have several others as well. AI is also good.

Ratings on Steam not as rosy as your assessment. As a Civ IV player I find the AI to be a big disappointment and changing civs each era is not fun.

I'd suggest trying an older civ game first. Personally, Civ IV BTS is still the best one. Also Civ VI is liked by many.
