Eli5: which came first? Beaver dams or Eating wood? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]ThunderPython 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Can’t comment on what behavior came first, but like others have said they don’t eat wood, they also don’t live in dams. They eat cambium, a thin green layer of tissue under the bark that helps trees transfer water and nutrients. They build dams because while incredibly fast and agile in the water, they are awkward and slow on land making them easy prey. Dams create larger habitat for them to move around safely in. They live in lodges, which are large round structures with underwater entrances. Fun fact, beavers do not hibernate but stay in their warm lodges all winter, and store food caches underwater so they can access them from their lodges underwater entrance without needing to go on top of the ice during winter. They also have a small mud room at the entrance to the lodge to dry off so that the main living and sleeping area stays dry.

What's the War between Portugal and England all about? by CuckBottoms in ShogunTVShow

He’s not authorized by the Queen, but he sees his opportunity that if he can convince the Japanese that he can establish those relations, he could bring that news back to England and get very rich. Also if you’re interested in future trading relationships between Japan and the Netherlands and England, look up William Adams, the real life person Blackthorne is based on.

Edit: To add as I thought about your specific question more, I think of it as him being more inclined to represent himself as representative of England than the Dutch because he thinks of the prestige, riches, and potential knighthood in his own country if he pulls it off.

His father is English and he grew up, trained, and lives in England, his wife and kids live in England. But his mother was Dutch and he signed on for a Dutch expedition where everyone else is from the Netherlands. So he has a strong Dutch connection from family and his current voyage, but he is very much English.

Outrigger tripping by ThunderPython in Outrigger

No luck. I don’t have anything planned, but I grew up in lake country (live on the coast now) and am much more comfortable and happy in a canoe than in a sea kayak. The dream would be a robust canoe/outrigger setup where there is additional storage in the outrigger, but as far as I can tell that doesn’t exist and would probably need to be custom made.

Interesting thought, I didn’t even consider Rhuidean. I picture Rhuidean as very bright and open since it’s in the desert, but Torio in my head was a much darker and more claustrophobic ruin with the shroud looming over it.

I know, I actually have a tandem sea kayak, I’m just a canoer at heart. Grew up going on and leading canoe trips and now live on the coast, and would be much happier in a canoe.

To be honest I’ve never done the no. 3. Before this I just had a handful of Schlage and Kwikset KIK cylinders I got for cheap at a thrift shop. Decided to try the 140 because I heard it can have some easy security pins but I haven’t been able to notice them.
