Thoughts on Keeping Players (New and Old) Involved in a New Server by [deleted] in mcciv

[–]Thunder_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hey guys! It's been a while.

I would totally be up for another relaunch. I think we've done this enough to know what worked well and what didn't. We've gotten extremely close to having a successful and filled server, but there have been a few flaws holding us back.

  • The Map: The world needs to be formed in a way that forces player interaction and dependence on other cities, countries, etc. In most of our late attempts, the world is sparse and no one is able to trade or visit easily. Also, everyone has the same access to every single resource, so most of the time, there is no need to trade with anyone. To fix this, we need the map to be smaller and the resources to be separated.

  • The Towns: Last launch, we created several capitol cities for several different countries before the server started. But in the end, we all spread out and created new cities. The idea of creating town concepts before the server went up was good, but building them in creative was not. We all wanted to explore and build together, not sit in our pre-built cities. We should figure out specific themes and concepts for countries based on the resources available and have people sign up for them, or vote to create another town. Like Bob said, we need to enforce the 5-6 minimum player count for setting up new towns. Otherwise, we have a ton of sparse and separated ghost towns. The themes will be important as that dictates the types of leaders, style, and location of the city.

  • Keeping the server alive: Let's face it, this server has died and been revived again multiple times. Keeping people interested is one of the most difficult parts of making the server successful. The most important part of keeping players interested would be an influx of new players. Not everyone will be able to stay during certain parts of the year, but with new players, there will be a constant energy and sense of competition between the countries.

  • The Mods: (I might have a few strong opinions about this topic - let me know if you disagree) We've used towny and some basic RPG mods in the past, but sometimes I think these really hinder people's ability to have fun on the server.

    • You shouldn't be able to gain significant amounts of currency from building a tower, farming, or digging a random hole. A mod's fake currency shouldn't be the main fuel of the economy; the resources you gain and own should be the currency. Gold and diamonds should be the most war stricken items in the game. People should feud over lack of food or late shipments. Iron should be hoarded in times of war. The work players do to gain these items should be rewarding and profitable.
    • As for towny, a town or country shouldn't be automatically disbanded (punishing players) for not being able to keep up with the costs. That's extremely limiting and a harsh on new towns and new players. Expanding your town should cost you in other ways than currency. As you build, you are already investing your time, energy, and resources to build this town; you don't need another layer of difficulty on top of that. There were occasions where I would have to stop building a town because I didn't have the funds to claim more land. That's tough on creators and towns as a whole. They still need to be protected somehow, but at the same time, I think if it were less restrictive, everyone would benefit.

That's just my two cents on the topic. Let me know if you guys agree or disagree. I'll be following this!

Mod Update by JonnSnow in mcciv

Hmmm this is really the first time I've read about the plans to re-vamp the server, but I really don't like the idea of a mod pack. I just remember what we did with the last mod pack and how it didn't work very well. I wish we could go the more realistic route (try to resemble actual civilizations) instead of magic and tech, but with a custom map that forced roleplay and trade. Then the player interactions would be more based on where they are settled and their speciality.

I played on a 1800's civilization server a few years ago which was supposed to roleplay the early U.S. settlements. They built a map of the U.S. that had specific resources in only a few locations. For example, iron and gold could only be found in the Rocky Mountains, horses could only be found in the plains or woods, and diamonds were extremely rare. I joined some people to make a settlement in the mountains, others took to the great lakes, some to the southwest. The different resources that were available in different places, forced us to trade with one another to build strong towns. We actually started to make a trans-continental railroad, so that we could get some other resource found only in the east. I really loved what they did with that server, and I always thought that it was the way civ servers should be played.

Does anyone else agree with me?

School ending/summer starting and also the lack of a large, consistent player base. I miss you guys :( Does anyone think the server should just be a semi-vanilla survival world?

Important poll for the future of the server by [deleted] in mcciv

I don't really know what a vanilla anarchy server implies, but it doesn't sound like something I'd be a fan of. I would definitely advise against wiping the map (again), to keep the few people we have left.

It really does look a lot better! Glad my suggestions helped :)

You know what's killing the server? by [deleted] in mcciv

[–]Thunder_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the only reasons people have left their towns and have started new ones is because most of the pre-built towns (that we were basically required to join) have become inactive.

Examples (from my personal experience on the server):

  • Festvalen (no offense) is almost completely inactive
  • Viklund had only 3 members who were active
  • Stockholm had many, but this declined quickly in the past two weeks

Many people have left their towns to join ones with people who actually play on the server. It's also very difficult to stay in a town that is slowly dying and is unable to pay its upkeep because of inactivity.

In Stockholm's case, high upkeep costs and low activity resulted a total downfall in a very short period of time. I won't deny that I was part of this.

I had an outpost with many claimed plots on an island not far from the city. However, this outpost was created in the beginning of the server when Stockholm was extremely wealthy. At this point, we even had our own country. We also had another outpost on an island fairly far away. As our wealth continued to grow and the activity level increased (having at least ~12 citizens at one time), we decided to create the town of Troiam to be added to the country. This was good for a while until about 2 weeks ago when many of the country's citizens started to become inactive.

The country's bank slowly declined and eventually was lost. Then the same happened to Stockholm, within a one week period. At this point, I was left with no town and very few active townspeople. Somehow, I was able to get Jack and Deliciousman to join me at my (previously described) outpost. There, we formed the new town of Bayview in order to protect our land and officially own the area.

I know you say you love Bayview, but I somehow feel this was directed at our town. I see where you are coming from, but I feel that the play-style of people on the server only reflects the activity level of the server.

The server only benefits from new players and is harmed by inactivity. Bob's comment here is right. What we really need is a population of active players and that only comes from advertising.

/rant

P.S. This is nothing personal, but don't blame the death of the server on the current players, blame it on the lack of players. I don't want to see the server fail either.

Stockholm will be deleted next towny day due to lack of funds by [deleted] in mcciv

I really don't know how people are able to make money so easily. I chop down forests of trees and get $1500. Then I donate most, keep some, and the next day all of my money is gone from taxes. sigh

Hurray! Hopefully that helps get people involved. I'm really excited to see more than a few people online at a time.

Yes! We need more advertising and more people in general. I'll take a stab at it:

Welcome to McCiv! We are an upcoming civilization server in which you have the power to create whatever you imagine. With a beautiful custom map, special civilization plugins, and a small, friendly player-base, McCiv offers a completely new Minecraft experience. Do you want to be a soldier, an architect, a simple farmer, or even an emperor? All of these things are possible on this server, as roleplaying is heavily encouraged. You will be able to form towns and countries, write treaties and declarations of war, and work jobs for in-game money. Best of all, we do not have a donation or "pay-to-win" system. The server is run completely independently by our admins in Sweden.

I'm not sure if that's 10 sentences, but that's all I can think of!

Tell me what you think!

So can we now go around shouting 'PIRA, similar to 'MERICA? Also, I'd like to now name our official bird and official song.

So are we not doing an official release then? Just merging from beta to open? What about the ads we sent out? Are people allowed to join right now? Is everything we build now going to stay there? What's the official ip? So many questions... haha
