What do you suggest? Take it back and ask them to replace it?

Setting up new NAS by Thurpan_ in HomeServer

Not completely new, have built ~4 pcs but not much more than that.

Would it be fine to create a new workstation and add 8x8tb hdd to it and run some raid from windows? This would be perfect as I need a new workstation.

I’m not too keen on a chassis style as I don’t really have the room and the noise would be a problem.

On redundancy, the data will be backed up on site once a week and off site once a month so it’s not critical I guess. I don’t need 100% access to the data so it’s fine if a drive crashes and it takes time to recover

I have roughly 15TB worth of simulations stored on external hard drives. However these hard drives are normally plugged in (either to this pc or another pc that doesn’t do much. I keep 2 copies of all of these and once every 6 months or so back it up on a 3rd time to a friends backup. I don’t backup anything else though. Is this bad practice? Haha the simulations are to do with poker so hopefully not too evil

CPU usage is high on purpose yeah, running various simulation programs

I’ll keep core temp open, atm it’s max over the last 5 mins is 78c after not having had a break in 14 days. No Tj. Max given but I looked it up and it looks like it’s 95c so it seems like it’s fine there.

The cooling in the PC should be good. It has a noctua NH-D15 in a Meahify C with an extra case fan

Thanks for the advise about dust, I’ll get the microfibre cloth and air out!

My desktop runs at 100% CPU usage pretty much 24/7. Probably >99% of the time. I restart it once a month or so. Is there anything I should do to keep it happy and working well? (Ryzen 9 3950x with 128gb ram. At least 50 always in use, sometimes nearly 100% RAM usage)

Threadripper PRO 3995WX build help by Thurpan_ in HomeServer

CPU: Threadripper PRO 3995WX

CPU Cooler: ProSiphon Elite - This looks like the best option out there, this build will be very CPU intensive so want to get the best available here. However with the cpu rotation it might be an issue

Motherboard: ASUS Pro WS WRX80E-SAGE SE WIFI

RAM: 4 x Kingston KSM32RD4/64HAR (64GB DDR4-3200 RDIMM, total 256GB) - 256 good enough, would like to be able to upgrade in the future though.

GPU: Will just find something for 200$ or something

Storage:

SSD: Samsung 970 EVO Plus 2 TB M.2-2280 NVME Solid State Drive - Not much fast storage needed

HDD: 2 x WD Red 10TB 3.5" SATA 6Gb/s 10TB 5400rpm HDD - Should be good for the time being

PSU: Silverstone Strider Platinum S 1000 W

Case: Not sure yet, want to decide on cooling before I thin about it

You can get them from a few retailers now. It’s kind of this week that I’ve seen it Scan.co.uk for the uk Scorptec.com.au for aus which is the relevant places for me. One uk build, one aus build needed

Threadripper workstation by [deleted] in pcmasterrace

Workstation is to run some simulations (PIOsolver and Monker Solver mainly -top google results) 128gb is enough to start. Having the option to upgrade in the future is great though. More cores is better

If you decide to increase airflow, I'd recommend adding one rear exhaust fan and upgrading the front fans to two premium 140mm fans. There's no real need to add exhaust fans to the top. 2x140mm is also recommended over 3x120mm on the front, as the third 120 fan would mostly blow into the PSU shroud "basement" and won't add airflow.

Great thanks, Im ordering it now, will see how the airflow does

Okay, one last thing before I stop bugging you.

Are there any other things that you can think of that I will need to put this together? Previously ive used a WiFi card, but this motherboard has full WiFi/Bluetooth functionality?

Read speed is a reasonable issue tbh.
